An abandoned fish stage in a once prosperous cod fishing village in Newfoundland. Newfoundland and Labrador's historic cod fisheries attracted local and international fishing fleets for almost five centuries before the Canadian government shut the industry down indefinitely in July 1992. By then, once-plentiful fish stocks had dwindled to near extinction and officials feared they would disappear entirely if the fisheries remained open. The moratorium put about 30,000 people in the province out of work and ended a way of life that had endured for generations in many outport communities. It also made evident the vulnerability of marine resources to overexploitation and that existing regulatory regimes were insufficient to protect cod stocks.

This is a great shot with even greater potential. Two suggestions: lighten up the far doorway a bit to enhance the notion that this dark corridor is the way - from the grey trap to the liberating light. I love the gradations of grey but feel that a more complete spectrum, from pure black to nearly white would enhance the impact. Perhaps some experimentation with Nik Silver Effects would give the ideal range.

The picture is properly exposed and in focus. The arrangement of the elements is orderly and pleasing. Depending on your purpose for taking the picture I would either remove the cake from the bowl or add some tea to a few of the cups.

Then we need to agree to disagree. I consider the approach you are suggesting to be parasitic and immoral since it raises the cost for those that behave more honestly to the benefit of those that do not.

The health insurance analogy stands, since many that can afford insurance choose not to pay for it, expecting to get treatment if something bad happens, even if they don't wish to pay. They do get treated and the rest of us end up paying the tab.

I am very disappointed in you, Sir, I thought you were better than that. You are simply exploiting the system at other people's expense.

I do not consider you to be an honorable man.

And I consider you to be a moralizing fool.

Yes, but the rest of us pay for people that take advantage of the system. It's like people without health insurance in the US. The rest of us are subsidizing them, so I guess you're happy being a predator on other people, and don't have that moral compass that I referred to.

If a company actively promotes a policy because they know it is good for business I don't see a moral issue in using that policy. I don't do it out of malice, I do it out of convenience. I don't consider myself a predator on other people because I always buy something there that I might have bought at a lower price on line. Comparing what I do to people without health insurance is stupid. Many of those people cannot afford health insurance, or cannot get health insurance. Moaning about 'subsidizing' them indicates that your 'moral compass' is a few degrees off north.

If that employee worked for me I would fire him. They wont stay in business long if that is their policy. Again I ask you how do you feel when you are taken advantage of? I am stunned you don't see anything wrong with this type of behavior.

You'd have a hard time firing him. That is the store and company policy. They have stores all over western Canada and business is booming! And they have been in business for at least 50 years.

Thank you all for your thoughtful and helpful comments. After further research I find a newer version of the NIKON 80-400 that Thom Hogan thinks is a major optical improvement. Since weight and the ability to hand hold is an issue I think this solution works. I can leave my 70/200 behind, bring my 24-70 2.8 for night sky and 16-35 f4 for wide landscape. Since I will be in private game preserves, I hope that 400mm does it and I can always switch to DX crop or crop in post.

You might consider picking up a Nikon 1.4TC for use on the 80-400. You may find you need the extra reach for some shots. DX mode isn't a TC its a 'crop before shooting'. During my visit to Kruger last May there was very little dust about and changing lenses during stops wasn't much of a problem with sensible precautions.

So long as they are promoting that policy, and it works for them, that's fine. Not every business can afford to do that. It's an ethical question, and it isn't so easy to draw a simple line. It's like the zone system with fifty shades of gray!

Businesses that engage in internet sales are fully aware of the requirement to offer free returns, or they would soon be out of the internet sales business. Therefore they budget for this and price their products to ensure that, at the end of the year, their books are in the black. To claim some kind of moral high ground because someone takes of advantage of their 'system' seems, to me, to be somewhat disingenuous.

We have, in the city where I live, a store which sells cameras, TVs, appliances, groceries, and has a pharmacy. I was trying to decide between two pocket cameras. I asked the salesman if I could take them outside and shoot a few frames to compare IQ. He said that wasn't allowed but he suggested I buy both of them and return the loser in the competition. I know that they are well aware that two camera stores in town have gone out of business since they started selling cameras in store as well as on line. Incidentally this store allows you to return anything that you are not happy with within 14 days - including things they could not possibly sell to someone else, like dental appliances. This policy makes this the busiest store of its kind in the city with a loyal clientele.

That episode is very good. If you go to Season 1, the episode called "Wild" you'll see an episode with Art Wolfe, one of my favourite photographers and the author of 'The Art of Photographing Nature' and 'The New Art of Photographing Nature'. Both excellent books on nature/outdoor photography.

With all due respect to Herschel, I disagree. Is it any different than buying one camera, deciding it doesn't work for you, sending it back and buying another one? People who are in the mail order business should be well aware that returns are a part of the business, and part of the reason they have put so many brick and mortar camera stores out of business.
