Reflections of the Past.

An abandoned fish stage in a once prosperous cod fishing village in Newfoundland. Newfoundland and Labrador's historic cod fisheries attracted local and international fishing fleets for almost five centuries before the Canadian government shut the industry down indefinitely in July 1992. By then, once-plentiful fish stocks had dwindled to near extinction and officials feared they would disappear entirely if the fisheries remained open. The moratorium put about 30,000 people in the province out of work and ended a way of life that had endured for generations in many outport communities. It also made evident the vulnerability of marine resources to overexploitation and that existing regulatory regimes were insufficient to protect cod stocks.

Nice scenic.
Hi, Don,
A well-composed image, all the stronger for the back-story...the way-back story...you provided!
I think it was in the writings of Farley Mowat that I first learned that Basque fishermen (and other european fishermen ?) were processing / salting their cod catches on the shores of Newfoundland not long after the Vikings had established a settlement at L’ance au Meadows (sp?) and well over a century before Columbus “discovered” the “New World”.
Looking forward to more of your catch of Newfoundland photons!

Thanks Dave. I have posted one other on the 'Birds in Flight' section.
Your shot conveys a good sense of place, strengthened by the story.

A lovely, nicely composed scene. I recently saw a television documentary about the Newfoundland cod industry in outport communities. Fascinating. Makes your photo even more impactful.

Without the back story, the picture stands in its iwn. Nice composition, and color. Nicely done
Excellent work! I assume you will post winter pictures from Silver Star and Big White?
