Here is another crop, as this was originally shot in landscape. I have too many of these type of shots of this species so thought I would try something different.
I selected the bird, brought up the whites and brought the blacks down. If I darkened the BG more than just a tad, the bird looked "cut out" on the BG. In the original shot I did desaturate the BG slightly.
I like the reverse head-over-shoulder pose. I agree with you about darkening the background too much. I like a lot of snap in shots like this. Still do not like the crop.
