Some hopeful good news for Canon R camera users. Is Canon finally ready to open its RF mount to third-party lens makers?

SonyAlphaRumors is reporting this possibility by years end.

BCN and CIPA numbers were showing that Canon R mirrorless sales were taking a hit from its restrictive third-party lens decision.

I hope this news is true for all Canon R users. You deserve to have great quality and affordable mirrorless-designed lens choices from Sigma, Tamron, Samyang/Rokinon, Viltrox, Meike, TTArtisan, Tokina and others , like E-mount users enjoy with over 200+ E-mount mirrorless-designed lens choices.

Cheers and best to you

Excuse me for not appreciating this post which is not really clear. I use the Canon adapter with my R7 and Sigma lenses without any noticeable issues. With 5 Sigma and no Canon lenses, I would not have bought this body. What am I missing here?

This is about mirrorless-designed RF lenses being made by third-party lens makers. This is not about using DSLR-designed third-party lenses used with the EF-RF adapter on R cameras. Two different things.

Mirrorless-designed lens can be made more compact and lighter than DSLR-designed lenses, and now have faster focus motors than DSLR-designed lenses, and tend to ultimately work the best with mirrorless cameras.

Canon has restricted third-party makers from making any but a few limited RF lenses, and it has cost Canon some sales worldwide of their R cameras. That is a fact, reported in many countries, even if UHH Canon fans dont believe it to be so.

Many Canon R camera users around the world have been wanting this to happen, so now maybe it is close to happening, and IMHO is a good thing in the long run for Canon and its R users.

Cheers and best to you.

The issue is that, so far, Canon hasn't allowed the likes of Sigma or Tamron to produce lenses in the RF mount, which, of course, doesn't require an adapter. They've only allowed a few lens makers to make oddball lenses, such as the Voigtlander RF 50mm f/1.

Thank you clarifying. I understand the RF lenses are sharper. Are they just the current lenses with the new mount or have the optics, electronics, and mechanics moved to the next level?

Yes the optics, electronics and mechanics have moved to the next level, and the latest mirrorless-designed lenses are the new and latest optical , electronic and mechanical designs.

Cheers and best to you.

Thank you. My Sigma lenses except for the kit one delight me with there sharpness. At this point in my career, I do not feel like replacing them because of the cost. I know at some point I will text the new one just to see what I am missing. The Canon RF's are about double of the comparable Sigma non-RF's.

I also loved my DSLR-designed Sigma Art lenses in EF mount.

I used them on my Canon gear and also when I first moved over to Sony I used them with the MC-11 EF-E-mount lens adapter, while i transitioned to native E-mount lenses . Now I love my native mirrorless-designed Sigma Art E-mount lenses on my Sonys. they are sharper, faster focusing, especially in video.

1) DSLR-designed Sigma Art 24-105mm f4 lens in EF mount, used on my 42mp Sony A7RII with MC-11 adapter . A double rainbow at low tide in the Scottish town of Portree, capital of the Isle of Skye.

2) Mirrorless-designed Sigma Art 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN used on my 61mp Sony A7RIV. The Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California, USA.

Many folks looking to decide which mirrorless camera brand to buy and use do want the options for the more affordable third-party native mirrorless-designed lenses to use with their mirrorless cameras of choice, without their brand imposing restrictions.

Cheers and best to you. Use what works for you and be happy.

You can use your Sigma lens because it came with a Canon mount, the EF version.

No again you are wrong architect, this is a NEW and different report.

In the previous report you are referring to, Canon announced they would consider approving third-party lenses on a lens by lens basis, which still was restrictive to what RF lenses third-party makers would submit for approval, and which lenses Canon might approve if any, especially if the third-party lens directly competed with a Canon RF lens, and with no timetable indicated by Canon for said approvals.

This new report says Canon may be going just to open up the RF mount to third-party lens makers by year's end, without the iffy Canon approval process, more like Sony, Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic have done.

Consumers want the RF mount fully open to third-party lens maker, not restricted to a lens by lens approval process by Canon. Folks wont wait around for that slow a process when deciding whether or not Canon R-mount offers the best affordable lens options like other mirrorless brands.

I wish you would learn to do better research and stay up-to-date, please.

Cheers and best to you.
