I print with an Epson 3880 pro and the black& whites are just great, a lot of times they turn out better than they did when I did some in the darkroom back in the days!

And I have an older Epson 3800 which still gives excellent results -- especially black and white. Both are 17inch. If you don't want to spring for a newer Epson, you can try looking for a 3800 or a 3880 on Ebay. Get one in "good working order" -- it's worth it. Note: A full set of new inks is still expensive -- $350-$450.

The reason is sharpness! That matters to some people.

Here's a question: I now am using 5D II. But I still have my old Canon 400D (Rebel, I think); would it be worth it to convert it to dedicated B/W?

I guess I'm asking to compare a post-processed B/W from my 5D with a B/W from a converted 400D. Any thoughts?

Qimage is what you want. I've been using it forever, and short of a full fledged RIP it's the best there is. Check out their website for more details:

Could you say more about Qimage, please? Does it produce prints that are better than the printer I use? I have an Epson 3800.

StevenG's last message was in May. It is now January. Did anything change, get resolved, or what?

Seems to me that the thrust of the question is answered by the black/white version being better. I know that for some people photography is just something you do, like eating or talking. But it's also an art; the artistic aspect of the b/w is easily evident compared to the ho-hum color -- even with enhancements to the color. For the most part, color is a distraction for me. Sometimes it's good or ok, but mostly it's b/w for me.

I imagine this wall could take up quite a bit of ones time - quite fascinating.

It actually depends on the time of year. The sun has to be at the right altitude and the right compass heading for this to happen. Mainly twice a year for the angle, but only once a year with the leaves.

Lucky to have it.

The recent post by edrobinsonjr, showing shadows of plants on his wall, prompts me to bring my fantastic image to UHH.

In my case, I have a window into which the sun can shine after passing through many trees up a hill of about one hundred yards. The final rank of trees creates many pinholes, through which the images of branches further up the hill project onto my wall. (See note, below.) The result on my wall is a dance by those branches further up the hill. Usually, shadows of leaves are very blurred. But these shadows are rather precise, almost sharp as they dance. In the image I'm posting, however, there is blurring due to the motion of the leaves.

The video of the dance was remarkable, but here is one shot.

Note: The same thing happens when we see spots of light on the sidewalk that is shaded by a tree. The spots are actually images of the sun. As proof, during an eclipse of the sun those same spots are mis-shaped by the shadow of the moon.

My error, . . . I failed to see that some were airdropped from our iPad and those were the jpeg, . . .

You guys are always inventing a new word for some reason. This is a new one on me. Now what is 'airdrop'?

For two nearby Apple devices, you can Airdrop an image from one device to the other. That is, transfer them between devices without wires and not even needing Wi-Fi. Need instructions? -- ask in another new topic.

. . . Here is what I do: I take the card out . . . and then use the "Finder" Mac app to select and the copy the CR2 files to directly to the Macbook. Once they are on the Mac I . . . edit them.

Don't you also download the JPEGs? If you don't feel like editing some of your RAWs, looking at JPEGS on the screen is more lively than looking at RAW images on the screen.

I post-process only a small percentage of the images I download. And I delete many of the unprocessed RAWs after a while, leaving only the smaller JPEGs for those images.

Question: are both cameras 14 bit sensors? That could be part of it, if one is 12 bit and the other 14 bit.

The number of pixels in an image depends on the image content.

To make a test, both cameras should try shooting the exact same scenes. . . with the same ISO.

All this talk about Fractal lenses---don't you mean Fresnel?

Right. And that may be why back button focus is recommended. If the focus target is through the grooved portion of the lens, the camera may become confused. I've not thought it all through, though.

(1) Remove the camera memory card from the camera

No wires required. :)

No wires? Really? The connection between the "appropriate connector" and the iPad? -- it's not just condensed air in the form of metallics.

And I like the second one better.

The second one looks like the negative was processed rather than the positive. And I don't prefer it much.

Irfanview (free) and use the Batch Processing feature.

Slightly off topic, here. Irfanview is for PC. Is there something like Irfanview for Mac? I know there are some sites that "converted" Irfanview for use on a Mac, but I'd rather have something that is built specifically for a Mac.

What are your lens recommendations for Iceland and Norway?
I just returned from about two weeks in Norway -- on the ferry going up the coast but that doesn't really matter. Anyway, my Canon 24-105mm zoom was all I needed even though I had other lenses with me. I lost maybe two shots due to having only that zoom close by.
