I've seen advertised a new item that fits on your hot shoe that tells you how to set your camera settings, I think.
Can anyone help this brain dead old man with what the name of this thing is? It's driving me crazy.

I was somewhat satisfied with the Tamron 18-270 when I came back from Oregon in 2014, until, I went to the horticultural domes in Milwaukee and photographed some cacti. Initially the shots looked fine, then I enlarged them and there was not a single image that was sharp and not fuzzy, not one spike of certain cacti looked nasty sharp. That's when I began to doubt that lens. That's when I put the Nikon 18-200 DX VR back on the D7100 and have left it there. That Tamron is "OK", "adequate"; but not good enough for what I expect when I start shooting and spend a bunch of cash on airline tickets and hotels and car rentals.

Of course, the more 'zoom' built into a lens, the more compromises the designer has to deal with.

When I was younger, everyone understood that a battery for my Ford sold under the 'Motorcraft' name is OEM while 'Interstate' was not, and a battery for my Pentax sold under the 'Pentax' label is OEM while 'Wasabi' is not.

But just continue, all afternoon and evening .... I have lots of popcorn.

Apparently, DxO Labs, the bankrupt entity, and DxOMark are now separate entities.

Cheap and Quality are typically antonyms.

Seems like there are two kinds of people into photography:

#1. Does exhaustive research, decides on the best quality equipment available to fit his/her needs; searches for a reputable source offering competitive pricing.

#2. Seeks the cheapest product, regardless of quality. Listens to others' uninformed claims (and offers same) without doing research.

Both kinds are members of this forum.

#3. Is a responsible citizen who lives within a budget and doesn't spend all 'loose' funds on his own pleasure.

Oh, I get it now. You are making the assumption that people would confuse the Pentax lens with a Canon lens because of the band on it. I'm going to speculate that the vast majority of people who know Canon L series lenses all have the distinctive crimson band on the front of the lens would know at first glance, that is not a Canon lens. The color is wrong and the width of the band is wrong and there is text in the band, which is not found on any Canon L series lens.

SS said 'red band'. He didn't specify shade of red, width of band, text on band, or any other characteristic of the lens or the camera, and was forgetting makes other than Nikon and Sony. I'm sorry if anyone was confused by a playful response worthy of SS himself.

NIK and DxO popularity is irrelevant, they are two completely different things. That's kinda like asking if mustard is more popular than hotdogs LOL

DxO is a photo editor, and NIK is a collection of plugins that will provide functions not included in most photo editors. NIK will work with various Photoshop editors, with Corel PaintShop Pro, presumably with DxO, and probably other photo editors I'm not familiar with.

If you Google "google NIK collection" you can find a copy of it to download.

I understand all of that. I was simply noting that a post with 'Nik' in the subject has attracted over 2000 reads while this one has attracted fewer than 500 at the moment - and part of DxO's issues might be that what is now their free product is what gets attention - a business plan needs money from somewhere.

I'm not certain the K-S1 is still in the Pentax catalog, but if it is, it is the least advanced of that series. The $600 K-70 would be a better camera to experience. Vastly improved higher ISO performance is the hallmark of all more recent Pentax cameras; all, including the K-S1, have had IBIS for some time now, and current production are Weather Resistant. Just saying. Cheers and be happy using what you have - taking pictures in the field is always more fun than comparing specs online.

In recent years, at most times Pentax has had a superior camera at every price point where they have any camera.

Couldn't that be said of any purchase at at any time since the beginning of time. Some will always like something while others will not like something. Everyone's mileage varies.

Just about three years ago, I purchased a Pentax K-30. Before that, I had tried an A6000 at Best Buy. My sense was that the Pretax camera has a more traditional set of knobs and buttons, while the Sony depended more on menus. The latter might be more comfortable for someone used to smart phones or other 'modern' products.

It can't display my Canon RAW files.
Raw files are manufacturer specific, not common industry standard like JPEG or TIFF.

I just "downgraded" resolution by moving from a D5200 to a D7000 because I like the controls where I can get to them and my D90 that runs my old glass is getting long in the tooth. I have never purchased a new DSLR. People should learn their cameras inside and out and get out there and take photos instead of looking for the next feature.

I'm glad for you that past technology meets your needs. I've been pushing against 'ASA'/'ISO' limits for years. My wife, who was one of many friends back then, remembers my excitement when ASA 400 color negative film because widely available - and now the Pentax KP is going to make 'insanely high' values available to me.

Film still has higher resolution because it has tiny grains of silver salts in it vs digital noise especially at high ISO numbers but the newest Nikon D850 might be the solution to equal it out. Unless in B&W they fix the grey scale to larger than 250 film will always be better definition for B&W.

My testing in 2003 showed that a 6mp scan preserved all the detail I was capturing on Kodachrome, and when I went back to Pentax 34 months ago I used the same lens used to take the Kodachrome slides and established that it could do better - so it was not the weak link in that process.
