My $10 UV filter saved me a couple hundred a week ago. I will use a filter ALL the time and a lens hood ONLY when I need it.

what kind of record player should I use to play records? - depends on whether they are 78s, 45,s or LPs doesn't it? of course, if they are medical records....

A trip to where? What you gonna see? Will this be a commercial tour (everyone back on the bus in 10 minutes) or a tour by car, train, horseback, rickshaw? Why are you going on the trip - to see someone, or to see something? Will you be taking pictures or doing some photography? Will you be doing street photography or countryside? Landscape or people? can you get far enough away from every subject or close enough? Plan your trip, plan your photography and prioritize your time in accordance with the purpose of your trip. Will your Companion be telling you "take the picture, lets go" or will you be able to spend two days if necessary to get the properly lit shot?

When I first learned this hobby, we used a Pentax K1000 or equivalent (I had a Ricoh) and a 50 mm lens to shoot ... everything. So, that is the answer to your question. Shorter and longer lenses mean only you do not have to walk as much, Zoom lenses take a strain off your back from carrying so much.

Don't forget your tripod - or at least a monopod/walking stick

Well, this is your first DSLR, Can we assume then that you are also (somewhat) new to the art of photography? If you are, then do not buy from your local groceryhardware store, your local electronics store and do not buy on line. Find a local (or regional, maybe) camera store where you can talk to a professional photography sales person about your wants and needs. Most local stores will hold or sponsor photography classes - with real instructors that can and will answer your questions - questions you don;t even know you have right now. Most local stores are now forced to match or nearly match the east coast west coast stores. If you have problems with your camera or a lens, many times a local store can fix it, and if not can send the camera/lens to the right place to get it fixed. They also know the conditions of your warrantee - and you will get to be on a first name basis with these people.

2,5,10 years from now, when you also know everything about photography, then you can let B&H or Amazon or Ebay supply your needs - at about the same cost, but without the service of your local camera shop. (I buy $$$ from Amazon, I buy from B&H, and Focus, but every Camera I have bought since the 70s has come from Norman's of Kalamazoo)

A, B, Cs, eh? In 73, 79, and 87, these three were in same position as the startup mentioned in the top post. I believe in 75 or 76, I bought from honest Abe at Focus Camera(NYC), and later at Abe's of Maine. Norman's in Kalamazoo had been selling on line for 15 years when B&H showed up in 73. Camera stores, by and large are run by people who love to talk photography, and that in itself tends to make them honest dealers.

I suggest you call the camera shop and find out exactly where your order is - it maybe on a boat from Hong Kong - Six weeks is typical for parts purchased in China. If the company cannot tell you where your order is, give them 24 hours and then cancel the check, card, paypal or whatever you paid with. No company can afford to have inventory set on the shelf any more - they all know they deliver or die. I bet it is on a slow boat from China

I went to google, and found a site that will digitize for $.50-$.90/frame, then I found this site:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/scanning-without-scanner-digitizing-your-film-dslr

I am not only passing it on to you, but I am saving it and may end up using it myself if ever my list of Things-to-do-today dwindles.

I will bracket if I have several stops of light across the image and I want to use HDR to enhance the dynamic range. I grew up on an AP camera, so I do use either AP or SP when I disagree with Otto, and I will use Manuel when the shot calls for it. If I use Manual, I will start in P and use the Light meter settings as a starting point. I use AP and SP backwards - I will use AP if I want to control the shutter speed and I will use SP if I want to control the aperture setting.

I am always interested in getting the most information into the camera when shooting - I pay no nevermind to the old hacks - younger than me - who think you must use a wooden tripod and a leaf shutter. My interest in photography lies in the image - I constantly strive to get the best finished image and I will use every setting on my camera, every combination o lenses and every darkroom (I have a darkroom on my computer) trick in the book to get the final image I am looking for. many years ago I had a Kodak 3A and a graphics Press 4X5, and even a twin lens 120, and I even had an old wooden tripod - in my tinker days, but today, it is all about image and that means using the camera for all its worth and then applying corrections to achieve "My" image.

Perhaps, if it is pop you are missing, you should look to a different film... In the days of film photography, you would use different films - both by company and by emulsions to achieve the look you were looking for. In today's digital world, you adjust the way the sensor modifies the light before it records it to memory. Perhaps bumping up the contrast in camera will give you the pop you are looking for, perhaps it is an adjustment of the RGB values.

Digital Cameras come from the factory setup with Kodak 100 film or Fugi 100 film, but that same camera has the ability to exceed KodaChrome 25 if that is where you need to be, or it can be set up to give results rivaling portra film for portraits.

Sigma is making the class glass of the Pacific region right now - it is the reason Canon tried to buy them and the reason Sigma declined Canon. And Sigma will allow you to buy two lenses for each Canon or Nikon you were looking to buy.

Smartphones are only the Instamatics and Polaroids of the 60s - 80s, the Browies of the 50s. That, and the fact that cameras are tools, hammers, really; capable of collecting light on a collector plate. The capture what they see, and a smart phone ain't really smart (though they are smarter than most of their users).

Smart phones, brownies, instamatics, and Canon D5Rs take pictures. Photographs are created by artists! Photographs are created in the mind before the camera is taken out of its protective bag and raised to the level of your eye. How many smart phones have a photoshoot conceived prior to the phone arriving at the instant of shutter release. How many smartphone operators knows a good shot in their camera even when looking at it. Try an experiment - sit down with your teenager's phone and review the photos with your trained eye. Select the pictures that you believe have the quality necessary to produce a quality piece of art. Now, go to your teenager's facebook page and see if even one of those photos ever rose to the level of being posted.

No real photographer needs be concerned about smartphone operators taking their jobs. Besides, smartphones are a temporary technology. The last Apple and Galaxy phones will be manufactured before the year 2020 - about the same time as the Canon Rebel T-10i is released.
