WhenI was in Grade School, measles was no big deal. It was way before the MMR vaccinations were even thought of.
Typically, Little Johnny would come into class and say to the teacher, "Please Miss, my sister won't be in for a few days, she's got measles". The prevalent attitude was, OK, let's get this over with before the holidays.
So why do we break out the Hazmat suits and go into Level 3 lock-down when someone even whispers the word?
Something must have changed!

When we were kids, there was no social media, so reports of the complications of measles was not widespread. From NIM: The most severe complications of measles are blindness, pneumonia, and encephalitis, leading to case fatality rates ranging from 0.1% in industrial countries to 15% in developing countries [7, 8]. Severe complications of measles are more common in children under 5 years and adults older than 20 years old.

Now we have the anti-vaxers and children from other countries that do not have a high vax rate coming in and infecting unvaxed children, so it is becoming more of a risk. Though death is a very small percentage, it is nonetheless real to the involved families.

"Poison sumac" is in the genus Toxicodendron, along with poison ivy and poison oak. I have been very fortunate that I have never had a reaction from those plants. I have seen some people really suffer.

Staghorn sumac is in the genus Rhus, along with Shining sumac, Aromatic sumac, Smooth sumac in the eastern US.

They are all in the same family - Anacardiaceae - which is predominantly a tropical family, and it includes edible plants such as mango, cashew, and pistachio.

I don't have much of a reaction either, but it nearly killed my sister. Someone was burning it and she went thru the smoke.

Thursday evening, as I was driving down the main street I'm my 55+ community, I noted the moon sitting perfectly between the rows of elms (I think) that lone the street. I stepped out to the middle of the street to snap this on my mobile phone. Just a quickie - no post processing.

Common sense? 🤣🤣🤣
Not too much of that around any more, as evidenced by Congress.

The news here in Portland has covered it quite extensively. I think they are still dissecting it and will allow the ocean to do it's thing in the next storm.

I loved so many of his songs. His song "I Wanna Talk About Me" was my introduction to country music. I was just station flipping when I came across it and was hooked. "Don't Let the Old Man In" (2019) always made me tear up. "Red Solo Cup" always made me smile and remember a day a few years ago when at a tiny riverside burger shack after kayaking, I ordered a gin and tonic. The girl who served me brought it in a red Solo cup, and I thought, Oh, great, an ounce of gin and a lot of tonic and ice. Nope. The gin was proportional to the size of the cup! John had to carry me back to the truck!

I received a notice from the County Clerk telling me that I'm on the list of potential jurors. I filled out the lengthy form online, and I'll see what happens. They know my date of birth, so they know I'm almost 80, if that makes any difference.

I was called about thirty years ago, and I was looking forward to being on a jury, but I was dismissed. My son was on a grand jury, and he found that very interesting. He was surprised that the drug dealers were so well educated and so well spoken.

In Los Angeles, if called for jury duty, you registered, then called in every morning between xx dates at xx time to find out if you were to appear the following day. Pretty civilized way to do it.

In the few weddings and birthdays my husband and I shot upon request, we found that posed brought better results. Candids resulted in people with mouths open while eating, messy tables, blinking eyes, loopy smiles, etc. Posed subjects can still appear to be having fun if you can get their attention and have them make a toast or something.

Some states have cards like that, but many people see them as cheating - getting something for nothing, as if food were a luxury. They even came up with a term, "Welfare Queen." It's true that some people cheat, but look at the other end of the scale. The benefits afforded to millionaires and billionaires are substantial.

I've known so many people who cheat the system. Once on SNAP but when they got better employment and didn't qualify again but never went off the program. A coworker making $40k in the 90s bragged about getting free eggs, milk and other staples. In my opinion, that is reprehensible. Like workers making hundreds a week under the table. People making $50-60k never filing a tax return. 👿

I don't use any Windows folders. I save everything on D, and I make up folder names that I like. Still, I sometimes have to fight with Windows to prevent it from saving something on C.

I make my own folders for everything, too. My D drive (I've been migrating from C to D) is organized like a filing cabinet, as I learned back in the olden days. Folders for drawers, subfolders by topic, and sometimes subfolders in there. And I know where everything is! I know people who keep everything on their desktop! 😵‍💫😵‍💫😬

When I was scuba diving, spitting into the facemask was a convenient way to prevent fogging. It's not considered polite to spit inside someone else's mask, though. 🙄

I would recommend against spitting on the inside of your windshield, though. The looks people give you!

I've seen so many DIY tips about spraying the inside and the outside of a windshield (like for ice removal). I found nothing that works as well as commercial products.

Oh, golly, I remember spitting in the SCUBA mask! I haven't dived since early 1980s (3 certifications). Thanks for the memory.
