I received a notice from the County Clerk telling me that I'm on the list of potential jurors. I filled out the lengthy form online, and I'll see what happens. They know my date of birth, so they know I'm almost 80, if that makes any difference.

I was called about thirty years ago, and I was looking forward to being on a jury, but I was dismissed. My son was on a grand jury, and he found that very interesting. He was surprised that the drug dealers were so well educated and so well spoken.

I was both on the list of potential jurors and grand jurors. The best I made was to court but they never picked me. I kind of like to be a juror to see what it's like. I think at your age you can choose not to serve but you still can serve if you want and they pick you.

Time will tell. I'm going away for a week in April, so I hope I'm not called then.

In Massachusetts you can ask to be excused if you are age 70 or older.

That was a check box on the form, but "maybe."

You are younger than your President. If he can do that job then surely you can do jury duty

You're not denied of your jury duty because you're old but you can refuse to do it if you want.

I'll be glad to serve if they want me, although it will interfere with my postings here.

Rant Warning!!!
I served on jury duty 20+ years ago and it was a PITA.
Unless you arrived 2 hours before the courts opened there wasn't any parking within a reasonable walking distance.
You couldn't pass security with a cell phone, pocket knife, or Anything that the guard would consider to be a potential weapon or security violation.
If you had Anything that could be considered to be a potential weapon or a cell phone you couldn't check it, you had to take it back to your car.
There was no place close by to eat so you had to leave, hike back to your car, go find a fast food place and eat during your drive back, park and Not Be Late for fear of a fine.
Thieves knew this routine and did their "shopping" all day long.
Those couple of weeks were the Longest Years of my life!
Thanks for the memories Jerry!

Edit: Yes, I will serve again if asked . . . .sigh.

Yes, parking involves a lengthy walk, but I'm fit. I remember going through the security check - lots of questions. Fortunately, there are lots of good places to eat nearby. The more I think about it, the more I'd like to be called.

But in reality your age may be a factor whether you got picked or not. If either side think it's a disadvantage for them they would not pick you.

I just did five weeks on a jury in Nassau County, a murder case. I did not want to do a five week case, but I really had no excuse. I actually found it to be very worthwhile and interesting. It was an excellent jury in terms of race, gender and age, and a nice group of people. I think we came up with the correct verdict. There was no doubt about guilt, just the degree of the charges. It took us a day and a half to reach a unanimous decision.

In New York, the cut off age is also 70, see: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2017/S2977

The last time I had Jury Duty, it was announced to the waiting room, that if one was NOT called for voir dere or anything by 4 PM of your first day, then you were done with your Jury Duty. There were also forms for those folks who wanted to volunteer for Jury Duty. Does it still pay $40/day?

Be well! Ed
