Canon 400 and 600 designs are newer than the Sony designs and much lighter.
Only the 500mm is older at 2012 and seeing as the Sony offering is still not as good optically or mechanically there was NO need to upgrade it.
Where did you think that Sony are newer?

The Sony 600 f4 is newer and has tested out to be the lightest, fastest focusing and as good or better image quality than the Canon or Nikons. It’s also the most expensive.

I have a very dark dog. I am looking for suggestions for the best way to photograph him without using a flash. His coat is very black and it is hard to get any definition of his features. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Softer light will always be your best friend especially when photographing dark animals.

Go mirrorless, this will not be obsolete.
Only the Canon EOS EF/EFs DSLR system will be 100% compatible with the new RF system. All other DSLR systems there will be problems if one wishes to grow into mirrorless as they all have limitations on compatibility.
The Canon R5 mirrorless will be ahead of the pack for some time to come it appears.

Wait till you see what Sony has coming soon.

Wow, you guys have a lot of free time to argue about nothing. It has been proven by several people reviewing Fuji cameras that they expose a little darker, not a big deal. Maybe you guys should spend this time trying to make some exciting images.

Interesting data but does it really matter?

Lately I have been shooting my Sony 100-400GM with a B&W filter, through 2 panes of window glass (albeit clean) and unless I pointed it out you would not know it.

Also have you ever blurred out a fence or other close objects and got a respectable image?

There is a world of difference between theory and reality.

I recently acquired this lens and luv it, mine has a Nikon clear glass filter on it, one the last Nikon items I have left.

Love the manly sound of my D850, when I am out shooting with buddies in Florida wetlands and a rare bird flies by, they can tell when I'm shooting, in fact, the entire preserve knows when I'm shooting. My D850 is a man's camera, not a baby wipe like the silent Sony a9. Yes, folks know when billnikon is around.

Probably scaring away all the animals, plus those A9 people have a lot more keepers.

That is the direction he should be going except he already has that lens. People always want something different including myself.

The Sony 100-400 GM is worth the extra money, it’s the best 100-400 available and you will get the amazing AF and focus tracking that the A7III offers.

Why?

Because there is always camera shake when hand holding a camera. Higher the mega pixel count means more detail and magnified camera movement. It’s there with lower megapixel cameras just not as apparent since there is less detail that is visible. For best results use a sturdy tripod.

The Sigma 100-400 is part of the Sigma Contemporary line of lenses, it is a budget friendly lens that can produce good images with proper technique. The Sigma Art and Sport line are more expensive and ment to compete with the best that Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji have to offer at a slightly lower price.

I was interested in the Sigma 60-600, have been impressed with all of the Sigma Art and Sport lenses. I was using the Nikon 200-500 and the Tamron 150-600 G1 and G2 for several years and they are great for the price but I traded all of them for the Sony 200-600 and I think it is just a little bit better optically and faster more consistent auto focus. Also trying out the Sony GM 100-400 and it is the nicest zoom lens I have ever used, but pricey.

If you are adapting a AF lens, the Sigma MC-11 is the best option for adapting to Sony. I am using it with a Tamron 15-30 f2.8 and a Sigma 24-35 f2 and they work great, eye AF, tracking, stabilizer, it all works well. I was using the Sigma 105 f2.8 macro adapted and it works fine also but I recently traded it for the Sony 90 macro and it is an impressive macro lens.
