I would do this only if I had an assistant tagging along with me. It would take the spontaneity out of photography.

I only do it as it applies to changing settings that change the way the camera behaves — i.e., BBF, not exposure triangle type settings.

We DO, on the other hand, when training crime scene analysts to use a camera, make them keep a log of every frame, all settings. We use this to help evaluate the images and discuss why they are good, or how to improve them. Of course, there is nothing spontaneous about crime scene photography...

A technique I learned as a systems architect in the IT industry was that every system got a log book. EVERY configuration change got entered in the logbook. IF you kept the logbook properly, you could start with bare hardware on page 1, and by the time you hit the last entry, you would have an identical system to the one you had. I do the same with my work camera now. I'm too intrinsically lazy to do it with my personal cameras... ;)

Rick, Clever construction. Sense is that plastic handle will snap. I would consider using metal conduit pipe sending it and put foam insulation on the top part.

PVC — especially the schedule 40 stuff — is quite tough.

I’m quite happy with my RX100 III, but have often wanted a little more reach in the lens. If I did not already have the III, I think the VI would be my next purchase...

Out homeschool cooperative is interested in putting together a photography course. I would be delighted to teach it, but don’t have enough gear — at best I would be able to teach 2 or 3 sharing equipment. I’ve checked with some of the big vendors and they all offer quite diminutive discounts. Many of the families in this coop would not be in a position to shell out $500+ for a camera outfit, and others have indicated they wouldn’t be willing given the unknown continuing interest of their child. If anyone is looking for a place to get rid of any (working, reliable and *reasonably* modern!) equipment, I would love to take it off your hands.

No, I am NOT trolling for cheap stuff to put on EBay! I am looking for enough gear to put together 5-10 kits to introduce some kids to this marvelous craft.

I do not know what the tax deductable status of such a donation would be at that point, but I have sent a query to the coop coordinator. If it will make a difference for anyone, I should have an answer withing the next day or so.

I like video taping the whole encounter mentioned earlier. Better than a witness.

Until the tape is thrown out at the supression hearing. A witness can be discredited, but not thrown out. Any evidence (e.g., video) has the possibility of getting ruled inadmissable for a myriad of reasons.

Buy a Nikon

That’s about the least helpful advice I have seen anyone on this forum give.

I generally find that when one of my crew are having focus difficulties, they have their camera set to some variant of “area” or “multipoint” focus instead of single point focus. If you aren’t in single point focus mode, you have no idea what the camera is trying to focus on. I also recommend (to my crew, based on the type of stuff we are doing) to turn off any “face recognition” or “eye focus” features — again, because it gives control back to the camera and makes focus a bit of an unknown.

Referring to XnView -- output quality is configurable.

I use XnView for my batch conversions. Works wonderfully. Cross-platform. I use it at work on Windows & at home on a Mac. Handles everything I have thrown at it (several versions of Nikon, Sony & Fuji RAW files). Available here: https://www.xnview.com/en/

Just a couple quick thoughts (not that I am an authority on any of this!):

1 — I just maxed out the RAM and replaced my HD with an SSD on my iMac that had been nearly unusable because of it’s intolerable sluggishness. Going from 8G to 16G RAM and adding the SSD makes it feel like a brand new machine — it is downright snappy unless I am really hammering the CPU (like with complex CAD renderings). Photoshop (CS6) went from a 3-4 minute load time to about 15 seconds. Passing a RAW file from the Lyn viewer to Photoshop’s Camera Raw went from nearly 2 minutes to about 5 seconds.

2 - I have just started looking at Affinity Photo (waiting on the workbook to come in the mail), and it looks incredibly capable on the iPad. I have personally never had issues with images not coming accross to the iPad when importing from an SD card (using Apple’s adapter), and yes, you can work on RAW files — I have used Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, and Fuji RAF files.

I have not had a general purpose laptop for years. I have a small, dedicated Windows laptop that I use explicitly to update programming on an RFID lock system (Windows specific software), write, compile and upload micocode to processs controllers (needs portablity), and to run GSAK (Windows only software). I keep the iMac around simply to manage my image library (currently 75K images taking over 700GB of disk) and to do the occasional photo edit. I pretty much exclusively use the iPad/iPhone for everything else. It’s been a very rare occasion that I wanted access to a “real” computer while travelling...
