I've never understood the desire to put third-party glass on a top-of-the-line camera. I believe the Nikon D850 has an articulating screen.

How about if the third party glass is just as good at a substantially lower price? What makes you think that only the camera manufacturers can make superb lenses?

I know this is a basic question but I don’t know the answer so please don’t respond like I’m an idiot. Keep the snark at the door. I’m pretty Flexibility much a rookie regarding post processing having done some basic editing with JPEGS. If I want to teach myself more advanced techniques do I need to be shooting in raw or does a program like Luminar work with jpegs? I have two slots in my camera so I can shoot one in jpeg and one raw.

You can edit jpegs in Lightroom, Luminar, Photoshop and pretty much any editing software. The issue is the amount of flexibility you have in editing when you are editing jpeg versus raw files. When your camera processes a jpeg the settings you selected for the shot (or those the camera selected for you if are using a fully automatic mode, “scene mode”, etc.) is baked into that jpeg and some of the data originally collected by the camera’s sensor which was not needed in creating the particular jpeg is just dumped. You are always ahead of the game if you retained the raw file. If you simultaneously captured jpeg you can certainly use that file, especially if it meets your needs straight out of camera, or with just some minor tweaks - but having the raw file available may well allow you to get a better end result as you become more proficient in editing.

You can create albums in Google Photos for free and share them with anyone. Unlimited storage.

Google photos used to be unlimited if you stored slightly reduced res photos - that is no longer true - there is presently a limit (don't recall the exact numbers) after which you need to purhase added storage. But the added storage is really pretty inexpensive so not too big a deal.

Google Photos or Amazon Photos (if you have an Amazon Prime account) - in either case you can put the photos you want share into an album and then send a link to the album to friends or family in a text message or in an email.

What surprised me was that a picture I deleted was also deleted from an album, but I guess that makes sense. No big deal.

Correct - if you delete the photo itself it will be gone across the board. You can certainly remove a photo from an album without deleting the photo - in which was it will not longer be in that album but will still appear in the catalog of photos as well as in any other albums you may have added it to.

This is a problem that just recently started. I use a Nikon D5. The bracket number is set to zero, yet I get dark, light or just properly exposed images. I've tried all the modes from full matrix imaging to spot imaging. I have even upped my EV & when I take the same photo one comes up light, one comes up dark & the other comes up fine. I'm taking the same views. What am I doing wrong? This is driving me crazy.

With most cameras the simplest way is to just do a reset - usually much quicker than trying to figure out what unintended settings are causing the problem

90 to 95% of McKeown’s listings are classic, antique, and similar. It’s nearly useless as a “blue book” for most actual user items, especially digital stuff.

TWIMC McKeown’s is out of date for numerous reasons both internal and external to the enterprise. But it was never intended to be a $$ guide for the sort of stuff sold in UHH classifieds and similar platforms.

I agree - McKeown’s would not be the way to go for any digital gear. Easiest course would be to check prices for used gear on offer by major dealers like KEH, MPB, Adorama and the like and then figure on getting 10 to 20% less than they will.

Hello fellow hoggers. Over a year ago I had a operation in a very tender and personal area. My biggest mistake was I trusted a general surgeon then to go to one that specializes in the area only. The general surgeon screwed me up and I have now been to see two specialist that both agreed that the operation should have never been performed on me. It has left me that now for almost 2 years I can not carry my camera nor can I walk a long time or take the time to sit at my computer and edit my photos. So my husband said how about replacing your older IPhone with the new 12 Pro. I know it is not of the quality of my Canon cameras I have 4 of them nor any of the lenses I have. But at this time the phone is light and I can edit my pictures in Snapseed on my IPad at least. I gave away my 7d as that one was the heaviest and I know I will never use it again. I just hope the young man I gave it to will have much joy with it. I am keeping all the rest for now as the specialist (both) have ok me to see a Pain and Spine Specialist who has a shot that might help block my pain. So two things I am trying to share with this post. First the new phones with the better cameras are good. Second please unless it’s a wart don’t trust a general surgeon for surgery that a specialist should be doing. This photo I took with my new iPhone 12pro of the Ravenal Bridge in Charleston, SC when I went to MUSC to see the specialist.

Sorry to hear about all the issues you have had with your surgery - bad enough you needed the surgery at all (although it sounds like you may have been talked into an unnecessary surgery and, if I were the cynical type, I might think that there was a money component to that advise) but to then have it botched besides is really miserable. Anyway, I have seen some really compelling photography done with a variety of iPhones, up through and including your version. For images that are shared on line in any of the social media platforms it is next to impossible to separate those images from ones taken with higher end “proper” cameras. So you have a perfect solution for yourself right now - and don’t be surprised once you are again able to use your Canon cameras that you find yourself opting to just travel light and going with the iPhone. By the way, Snapseed is a great APP - you might also consider Lightroom Mobile - I have the paid version with cloud storage (the APP itself is free- but without a subscription lacks a few features that I want) and so that the images sync across my iPhone and iPAD. With my RAW files from any of my cameras my normal work flow now is to pull those files into either my phone or (most often) my iPAD and then I do my edits typically on the iPAD - I much prefer that to working the same files on my laptop.

It IS about B&H. They used to use UPS and switched to Fedex after some bumps at Christmas time a couple of years ago. All the delivery services had trouble that year because online ordering had jumped so much but B&H bailed. I've started ordering from other vendors, Hunt's Photo and Video being my favorite but also Adorama. Hunt's is a smaller chain but they actually seem to care about their customers, not a strong point at B&H.

It's not a problem to get B&H to ship UPS, just call them and ask for UPS. The problem is that what they would have shipped free on Fedex will be charged the market rate on UPS. For me that added $70 to one of my orders. Fedex is the pits where I live- the deliveries from B&H take anywhere from one to five days longer and they throw the box at my front step. UPS delivers it gently and, per my request, rings the doorbell to let me know I have a package because it's the same driver every day. So it is B&H's choice- Fedex always stirs up a lot of negative comments here and UPS usually gets more of the positive ones.

I agree - they may also get a better rate on shipping from FedEx - maybe if more folks started asking for UPS B&H might get the message. If you ask for UPS and they tell you there will now be a shipping cost ask them the waive that fee - or cancel the order

Hello Fellow UHHers. I typically save all my day’s photos onto my iPad when I’m away from home. This time, since i was away for a few days, I did some editing on the iPad, which has pretty capable tools on it. However, I noted when I then uploaded these edited photos into my computer, that the file size was much much smaller. Typically my photos are about 7 to 10 mb, but these photos edited on the iPad are less than 1 mb. Does anyone know why this is? Thank you! JimR

I routinely import the RAW files from my various cameras into LR mobile and edit them there. If I export edited jpegs to my camera roll they end up being larger than if I had captured jpegs in camera. The only time that’s not true is if I export smaller versions as recommended for photos to be shared on various social media platforms - those I typical export at 2000px on the long axis, resulting in files that are about 3MP - the file sizes there are usually around 2-3MB in size.

Is it Win 10, my new computer or me?
When my 11 year old computer failed, I thought I deserved a new one so I purchased a Dell core i7 with Win 10. I assumed I could look forward to 11 more years of trouble free service. The old computer went to my son who I ask to transfer everything to the new computer. ( the slide rule was just invented when I went to school so what do I know) All the photos were there and so was LR which I had installed in 2013. Only trouble is, LR does not work. I don't remember how I installed it originally- I can't find any disc. I don't want to subscribe to anything since I only use it once or twice a month to touch up photos of my great grand kids. Any suggestions on what I might do next to solve this issue? Is there a suitable substitute for LR to at least let me edit my photos?

I have LR mobile on both my iPhone and iPAD - I do have a subscription since I wanted to be able to save my RAW files in the cloud and I wanted my phone and tablet to sync - but you can use most of the LR features without any subscription. I just upload my RAW files right into LR (most often on my iPAD) and then do my edits there - works great.

I know I am going to catch hell for this but I really don't care. I firmly believe in photography beginning and ending at the camera. This post processing is getting out of hand and as I see it the end results may eventually be nothing more than a composite of elements removed from software and no camera was ever used. That's my belief and I'm sticking to it!

And you are entitled to believe that and stick to only straight out of the camera images for your own work - as to the post processing getting “out of hand” I hope you don’t compromise your integrity by tweaking things like contrast, white balance, or highlight and shadow levels after the fact - or are those adjustments not part of “out of hand?”
