I found Rongnongno's comments quite interesting.

Awfully good. Amazing performance from that 4K procedure, I'll have to try it.

Joining the list. I have the 100 - 300 on the GX-8, and find the whole rig wonderful. Looking to get the 100 - 400 later in the year.

Good thread; hope it keeps going.

Photos is a much more powerful app than it gets credit for, even for rudimentary RAW processing.

To get any photos or group of photos into "Photos", just drag and drop it (them) onto the Photos app icon on your computer. That will start the import dialogue, which you can accept.

Also, instead of photostream, turn on iCloud photo sharing. This will sync you photos among all devices, optimizing for space if you're limited.

As an aside, I am also an Aperture user, finally about to switch (probably to Capture One). As you say, it still works on el Capitan, but I fear it won't on Sierra coming soon. In any case, with no support/upgrades for 3 years, it is time to move on.

Thank you, Suntouched. Parallels and confirms my thinking closely.

I hadn't thought of the pistol grip. I think I'll get that when I get the 100 -400 towards the end of the year.

Interested in your thoughts. I also own the GX-8 and the a6000. Curious which is your "go-to" camera, and how do you use the other?

I recently bought the GX-8 and a 100-300 for its reach on an Alaskan cruise, (which was wonderful). But I have grown to like the camera so much, I bought the 14-140 and am using it more and more frequently.

What is your experience.

Thanks.

Thanks again everyone. UHH is so wonderful for getting insights and ideas that one just wouldn't with Google searches and articles.

Thank you both for your detailed explanations. Makes sense, and I am so glad I asked. Clearly my work-around would be no good.

For my purposes, that clearly means either don't buy the software, or buy it and process the unsupported camera images (5 to 10% of what I shoot) in other software.

Probably best to go with Lightroom CC and be done with it. Guessing Apple's new operating system (coming up soon) will kill my Aperture for good, and it is time to step up to a better processor anyway.

I am amazed at all the Seagate failures reported on UHH. I have used Seagate drives for years, since back when large clunky contraptions could only hold a few 100 MBS. I have never had one fail, and I'm sure I've used over a dozen.

I find their "Slim" portable 2 tb to be fantastic. Small easy to carry when traveling, very quick and easy to plug in 2 and redundantly back up when importing off an SD card. Also their color specific portables for quick recognition.

I bought a WD 2 tb portable from B & H, and while I accept everyone's word that it is more reliable, I am sticking with Seagate for its ,ore compact size.

Just my experience, and with redundant back- up, failure would not be disaster.

If I convert a RAW file to a tiff, and then export/ import it into software that would not otherwise have supported the camera from which the original file came, do I understand correctly that the tiff is "lossless", meaning I can edit it just as I would have the original raw file?

I suppose of necessity the first conversion would have done some developing/ processing of the RAW.

Thank you for your help. ( I am looking at Capture One, which seems terrific in many ways, but it doesn't support one of my lesser, but nevertheless somewhat frequently used, cameras.)

In Mac "Photos", you can right click on the image and then select "Get Info", as a previous responder said. It will then open a box with all the info, including a map showing the location of the photo (if it has been geo-tagged). You can then scroll from picture to picture leaving the box open, and the information will change with each image.

In addition, you can add information to the box, such as title, caption, keyword, or location, which will then attach to the image. You can add information to many pictures at once, by highlighting those you wish to work on, leaving the box open, and editing or adding information as you wish.

Photos is a very powerful organizational program, and quite good for basic processing, even from RAW.

I have the previous model (ZS-40), and it is fabulous. Whenever I travel or for almost any around home shoot I go on, I take camera and whatever lens seems best for the occasion, and then have the ZS-40 right in my pocket covering from 24 to 720 mm for all shots outside of whatever lens I took. I therefore have pretty much all shots covered, without carrying multiple lenses and switching.

Photo quality is excellent for such a small camera, and it shoots raw and has a viewfinder allowing more stable holding of the camera.

I would assume the 50 is as good.

Please do post after trying on the GX-8. I considered the lens for my GX-8, but have not yet pulled the trigger.
