With much pain, I switched from Aperture to Photoshop CC after the announcement of the demise of Aperture in June of 2014. FYI Aperture, ironically, still works fine on my computer running El Capitan.

Apple replaced it with Photos. Which, among other things, was intended to serve the iPhone crowd and make it easy to share etc. So I have tried to use it in conjunction with the iPhone. Photo stream works ok.

My latest idea was to create a folder called "iPhone pics" that I could export into (From CC) and then have those images appear on my phone. I know LR Mobile does this but the space is limited. Back to Photos. I have not figured out how to get the images in said folder, even after import to Photos, to appear on the phone. Maybe I need to import to Photo Stream then save to the phone?

Photos is a much more powerful app than it gets credit for, even for rudimentary RAW processing.

To get any photos or group of photos into "Photos", just drag and drop it (them) onto the Photos app icon on your computer. That will start the import dialogue, which you can accept.

Also, instead of photostream, turn on iCloud photo sharing. This will sync you photos among all devices, optimizing for space if you're limited.

As an aside, I am also an Aperture user, finally about to switch (probably to Capture One). As you say, it still works on el Capitan, but I fear it won't on Sierra coming soon. In any case, with no support/upgrades for 3 years, it is time to move on.

I have also switch to Photos on my IMac and use it with Affinity and Intensify. This has actually worked just fine for me.

I too am an Aperture user along with iPhoto (disabled Photos). It does everything I need, has raw support for the latest cameras, etc. I really don't care about updates, etc. I do use NIK plugins and PTLens with "A". I find myself not wanting "new" everything. I buy things that I really like and keep using them for a long time. Technology is great as long as you keep it out of cars( too may drivers are distracted),and yes I don't text...I like to talk to people. Am I showing my age yet?

Maybe. I'm glad Aperture is still working for you. It was better at organization than Adobe LR.

It's amazing that it still works and it might keep working with the next OS. I still use it for viewing my legacy library. Aperture is a better organizer than Lightroom. I can find things in the legacy library in seconds using Aperture. Not the case with LR and the LR Library. But even if Aperture doesn't work with the next OS I have moved on. Back when the announcement was made, I set about exporting all the versions, it took a while. So even though I can access them faster using Aperture, I can also access them using other programs.

I am also glad to hear that Photos is a good editor. I am glad Apple finally did give a good editor to the people who stuck it out. But Im not going that route again. I vowed after the Aperture debacle, that I would never be dependent on one editing/organizing program and I sure as heck am not going to let Apple take me down that path again. It was more work but I have managed to set things up so that I can use multiple editing programs.

I too am an Aperture user. Used Photos as a back-up storage to Lightroom, started using it when I learned that Aperature will no longer be supported. :-(

NIK, Affinity, Aurora, DxO piccure+ all work in Aperture. I sometimes click and drag images from Aperature to LR-works well but some data does not make the trip to LR- camera info for instance.

Seems that the photos on my iPad, made while tethered are automatically transferred to Photos on my iMac.

I am having problems when I first insert a chip with images after the most recent update to Photos. Photos opens and starts to load the images. I must stop this action (Or not start it) before starting with LR. If I do not stop Photos from downloading, my iMac locks up and must be shut down to reset things and allow me to continue processing my photos. Apple "genius" had no idea what was happening, even after taking control of my computer remotely and seeing what happens.

Since this seems to be a generic discussion of Apple’s “Photos” application, I’d like to toss in MY gripe/complaint/issue.

I had been a happy user of iPhoto until Apple “updated” to Photos. Now, looking through my photo library, there are “grayed-out” squares where there used to be photo images. What happened? Are they still there and Photos just isn’t displaying them for some reason? Is there something I need to do to “restore” these images? Or are they lost and I’m screwed?

I'm not sure how to answer your question, but I read that you cannot edit an image with both applications. If you edit an image in Photos that image will no longer be available in iPhoto.

Not much of a genus. Sounds like the update has a bug. Have you tried restoring the old version from backup?

You might want to visit the Apple forum and see if there is any chatter there about it, and also check the PhotoApps.expert site. PhotoApps used to be called Aperture Expert and he offers training etc in Photos as well as forums and discussion boards, problem solving, etc, on Photos and other software.

You may be right. I’ve heard that, too. But, knowing Apple as I do, in almost every case of an “update”, work from previous versions can be viewed/edited on future versions. Backwards compatible. Apparently not, with Photos.

Not always. I recall some of the Aperture updates (I started with 1.0) there was a warning "you library needed to be converted, you will no loner be able to use the older version after the conversion".

But of course that's one reason why we keep backups, right?

I still have a couple of off-line hard drives with Mac OS X 10.6.8 on them, along with everything I used when I had that configuration (Aperture, Photoshop CS3, etc.). I also have two 2010 Mac Mini computers that will run that OS.
