Sony is offering firmware upgrades to several of their cameras. Has any one done this. Do you have to connect your camera to computer via USB cable. One of the options is for the a6000 and I want to do it right. Unright means entire camera get bunged up.

Follow upgrade directions and you should be just fine.

I just did an update on the Panasonic Gx8 camera. First time that I have ever done one. It was done via the (reformatted) SD card inserted into the computer. Just follow the instructions and make sure your computer is fully charged. The whole process took about 15 minutes or less. Let me know how it goes as I have the a6000 too.

You don't have to connect the camera to the computer, actually it is safer not to. You can just use your memory card to get the update off the computer and then after everything went ok, insert your card in the camera and transfer it in a very safe way from there!

I did one for the A6000 with no problems. Just followed the instructions.

There are frequently many ways to upgrade firmware for a device. Follow the instructions CAREFULLY , and they may give you multiple choices. Make sure that your camera batteries are fully charged. This is going to vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, and I can't speak to Sony, but this is a pretty standard procedure for many modern electronic devices. I've never had a f/w update fail in several decades. It can be a little scary the first time you do it, 'cos it's a little bit like a brain transplant!

I've upgraded the A6000 twice. No problems, just follow the instructions. You should print out the instructions before you start.

USB cable is the method I used for A6000. Some cameras have you copy the new software to an SD card. I'm not sure if that is an option for A6000.

A Sony has to be connected via a USB cable. Then just follow the step by step instructions for updating. It's easy, I've done 3 cameras and didn't have any problems.

If you are nervous about updating call Sony tech support and ask them to do it with you. The first time i updated Fuji camera I had Fuji walk me through it. (If sony tells you to follow instructions then tell them you spent enough money on sony gear for them to give you a few minutes.)

I have updated my Sony A77II and my Sony A99. Both from their site, you must use the USB cable that came with the camera, no other cable will work, cause I tried others. The site is very straight forward and easy to use, just follow the directions and have fun.

I have read that all of the previous updates must be done first and not just the newest one. Is this true? I have never updated my A6000 but want to do it. This is the only thing that is stopping me.

My sony A77II update on the sony site was automatic to the newest one, no, I did not have to do previous ones first, just go the the Sony site and follow directions. Yes Virginia, it is that easy.

Suntouched-

Interested in your thoughts. I also own the GX-8 and the a6000. Curious which is your "go-to" camera, and how do you use the other?

I recently bought the GX-8 and a 100-300 for its reach on an Alaskan cruise, (which was wonderful). But I have grown to like the camera so much, I bought the 14-140 and am using it more and more frequently.

What is your experience.

Thanks.

I upgraded my a6000 once. I carefully followed the directions - which did involve connecting a USB cable to the camera - and I had no trouble.

Thanks for reminding me though. I'll have to check whether Sony has made another release.
