This is one of those rare photographs where everything seems to fit together properly. The kids don't dominate the image, but the lighting and composition immediately direct your attention to them. I suspect they rarely ever hold hands when they walk together, but they are here. That's the thing that ties everything together and creates an image that's as close to perfection as most of us are ever likely to see.

I hope you have printed, framed and hung it. If you haven't there will surely come a day when you will regret not doing it. .......... Coot

It is beautifully done,Jay. And a perfect story of walking into the unknown, certainly reminiscent of Into the Woods.

Thanks Carly. I think we can all relate on some level.

A decade has passed since I took this photo. It might as well be a day or a week. We took a short walk in the woods on an ordinary, if beautiful, autumn afternoon simply to pass the time. Yet when I look at this image today, the moment it captures feels anything but ordinary. To me now, it feels magical and enchanted and ... important. A beautiful time in my life that only exists in my memory and the pixels of this digital photograph. I stare at the picture too long and I am gripped by a deep feeling of nostalgia.

Very pretty. Love the water and the sky. The pilings make a great foregroud. Is that from the Dumbo section of Brooklyn north of the Brooklyn Bridge. (got to love the regional names in NYC: Flushing, Yonkers)

Thanks for the comment! You are close, it's actually just south of Brooklyn Bridge.

The left side (behind the trees) did not change making it look less realistic. Like the concept and the composition

Very well done, Jay. Was that from the Jaggar Museum viewpoint? You sure added interest and perspective by including the trees. And getting to stars to show up adds to it also.

We were there a year ago. I was really bummed the entire area was socked in by fog that night. But we stuck it out and were rewarded with the fog lifting, giving us some great photo opportunities. I'm glad I was ready to go, because after about 10 minutes the fog rolled back in and the volcano disappeared.

Anyone that goes to Volcano NP should make dinner reservations at the lodge or pack a sack supper. Jay's shot shows how grand the view is at night. Here is the rather drab day view of the same thing:

I wish I could have spent more time there, but had to move on to shoot the sunrise.

Thanks for the tips!

My first attempt shooting lava. Lucked out with a lower layer of clouds to reflect the glow but a clear sky to show the stars. Very little processing.

Tyhpically HDR is used so all of the image is exposed properly -- both lighter and darker areas. In your photo, the land seems quite underexposed and the benefits of HDR are not apparent. Compositionally, I find there is too much sky and not enough land.

If you are able to straighten the horizon, it would be a good idea.
