Marxgo, you should check out Marietta sand prairie here in Marshall county. It's 230 acres in size. What struck me last year when I discovered it, was it was totally deserted the day I was there. All that wide open area and no one there but me. They mow paths thru it, so it isn't too difficult to navigate. I took a ton of pictures. I'll have to see if I can find a few to post in a new thread.

Thanks Whuff, I'm always taking notes on where to explore/take pictures next. And I'll watch for your postings.

There is so much beauty around us if we only open our eyes. These pictures express that, I feel.

Simple subjects, great photos. A good lesson in opening our eyes. The first photo is my favorite.

Hi and welcome from another fellow Iowan. I am one of the amateurs on here but I have learned more on this site in 3 months than I learned in 3 years trying to figure it out for myself. Old gas stations sound like a fun project. Iowa is also good for old barns and country churches. I figure someone has to record them before they are all gone. The Prairie restoration near your town is one of my favorite places to take pictures and they have started to have photo walks.

Here is a sample of Dynamic Auto-Painter. You can control how long it runs - for more detail or less.

Have you tried Dynamic Auto-Painter. You can bring it up on the Internet and use it as a trial before you have to buy. It gives you lots of painting "styles" to choose from.

Same Face-Different Looks

Thanks. Enjoyed the different possibilities. For some reason that even I don't know.....I liked number 2. :-)

I'd say picture taking trip a great idea. But make it fairly short at least the first time, and get them inexpensive point and shoots (that fit their hands) and then let them make all the decisions of what pictures to take. Its hard to say at that age....they may love it or they may be totally bored. But one way or the other, attention from Grandpa will be welcome.

Loved both those pictures. But I especially liked the second one because of the way it was framed and the brightness of the horse against the surrounding trees.

Thanks for posting these. I loved looking at them. It was like Time Traveling and it captured the imagination.

He has already done 'several' of the county ones. The individual "County Freedom Rocks" will be painted once, not re-done each year. I have viewed the one for Polk County that is located at a Legion Post (I believe) in Bondurant. I have visited the one in Mitchell County, in St Ansgar twice. Both of those are great also!! I think there are a couple on the western side of the state that have been completed also.

I guess an interesting project then, would be to visit and photograph all of them as they are finished and put together a book or collage.

The "front" side is extremely moving also! I find that there is an awesome 'aura' to the site, really grips the heart with feeling, especially when noticing the items that have been left behind by veterans that have visited!! I make the 2.5 hr drive to visit it a couple times each year just for the opportunity to spend a while sitting and reflecting on the "Cost Of Freedom" !!!

BTW, VERY nice photo of that side!!

Thank you. Very interesting to know of your experience also. I have heard that this individual may try to paint a rock in each Iowa county. It is good to know that this is important to people...... and it seems to be.

This picture did not qualify for the contest (I took it last summer), but I got to thinking it might be interesting, especially if you travel across Iowa. It is a 56 ton boulder located 37 miles west of Des Moines on Hiway 25, a mile S of I-80 at Exit 86. It is repainted yearly by a private individual at his own expense (since 1999) as a Thank You to Veterans. You can Google Freedom Rock and find it.

Staples coupons are worth signing up for. I used my 25% off yesterday on a set of 4 ink cartridges. You get a lot of e-mails from them but in the long run you get some good savings too.

I like the eye in the added contrast picture best. But I like the background in the original. The eye lashes and hairs above the eye really add character to it. I could do without the white spot to the upper left and I find the nose or part to the right rather confusing.
