This picture did not qualify for the contest (I took it last summer), but I got to thinking it might be interesting, especially if you travel across Iowa. It is a 56 ton boulder located 37 miles west of Des Moines on Hiway 25, a mile S of I-80 at Exit 86. It is repainted yearly by a private individual at his own expense (since 1999) as a Thank You to Veterans. You can Google Freedom Rock and find it.

The "front" side is extremely moving also! I find that there is an awesome 'aura' to the site, really grips the heart with feeling, especially when noticing the items that have been left behind by veterans that have visited!! I make the 2.5 hr drive to visit it a couple times each year just for the opportunity to spend a while sitting and reflecting on the "Cost Of Freedom" !!!

BTW, VERY nice photo of that side!!

Thank you. Very interesting to know of your experience also. I have heard that this individual may try to paint a rock in each Iowa county. It is good to know that this is important to people...... and it seems to be.

He has already done 'several' of the county ones. The individual "County Freedom Rocks" will be painted once, not re-done each year. I have viewed the one for Polk County that is located at a Legion Post (I believe) in Bondurant. I have visited the one in Mitchell County, in St Ansgar twice. Both of those are great also!! I think there are a couple on the western side of the state that have been completed also.

I guess an interesting project then, would be to visit and photograph all of them as they are finished and put together a book or collage.
