I have twin grandkids....... girl (very artistic but a bossy little bitch) & boy...... ( just potty trained but goes with the flow) they turned seven in November.....they have more toys than Santa's factory..... all they want, want, want, is video crap and Barbie dolls!!! I'm thinking about buying them canon SX 50's and taking them on a fun little road trip......Is this a good decision? all comments welcome. My wife thinks I'm crazy.

sincerely,

Bad Grandpa

I believe I would go with a less expensive camera, unless you plan to get it back after the road trip.

you must have information in order to form an opinion. (unless you are a politician)

I'd wager they could probably shoot some good photos, but my concern would be whether an SX50 would be rugged enough for a 7-year old boy. Sound like fun though, gramps! I'd say go for it.

The idea is great, i too think the sx50 is a tad much for a youngster. Maybe a smaller point and shoot. cameta has a nikon refurb for about 60$. 12x zoom 12mp. Case card and all for 74.95 shipped.

My granddaughter's in kindergarten.
Take them backpacking/camping for a week in the Colorado mountains. They might be a bit young for the cameras, but it will get them away from all that stuff and get into nature. do some fishing and let them do every step to get it ready to eat. It might help them appreciate a toilet seat when they get home too. They might want to do it again with you, and that would be a totally cool thing for them to say some time down the road "grandpa took us camping every year."

good comment...these kids live in a pussy world...play dates....over protection...don't get a bruise or scrape...play "virtual" games..... it drives me nuts...you don't have to buy them a camera provide them something that makes them bond with live humans...... baseball bats, tennis rackets, marbles, anything but vid games and xbox xxx version 3.6...I'm sure xbots are fun to play...but it sucks all humanity and social skills from the young...........jmho I could be wrong.
