This is the type of shoot I do most often. All of the suggestions are good. Lighting can be difficult, I shoot raw +Jpeg. Most of the time the Jpg works fine, but if I need to correct, I can. The emcee (host) needs to help by pausing the speakers and any award recipients while onstage. Award recipients will take the award and run, if not held for a moment, you will have side views as they head off. Be sure to leave enough room on the sides so you can crop to an 8X10. Ladder is always a good idea. With groups, sometimes you can get some seated and others standing so you can get a nice tight image

My sales guy at Calumet would try to come as close as he could to the legit online dealers (Adorama or B&H) so there was not a big hit taken by purchasing for them. I don't mind the small premium, and they were willing to work to get the business.

Having purchased a new dslr recently, I was searching for a bag for it. I ended up puting together my own bag that cost me little and is just as good as or better than any camera bag I've seen so far. I got one of those padded and insulated lunch carry bags that had just the right dimensions for the camera, and I lined the inside with additional soft material cloth. The camera slides in and out easily and is well protected. And when I zip up the top instead of using the velcro flap, it's nearly waterproof too, thanks to the insulation lining intended to keep the food cool. As a plus, I imagine it's more likely thieves would try to steal your obvious camera bag rather than an innocent-looking lunch bag. The bag costed me only 7 Dollars, far less than the cheapest camera bags. The only downside is that it doesn't have extra room for a second lens.

I got a padded Fisher Price Diaper bag to hold a single body and lens when I was walking around the city. Nobody steals Diaper Bags!! Lol Still use it on occasion.

Hi Al, question about Boston, Where is the Calumet Store?
I know where the Calumet market is but where's the store?
I feel lost since Ziff closed. Jim

They have a brand new store on First Street in Cambridge. If you know Cambridge at all, it is very close to the Galleria shopping mall, close to Kendall Square.

What part of Eastern MA? Rockland for me!

What bag did you buy, Model etc, cost. I still haven't found "The Perfect Bag", I have a couple of ones I like for different shooting scenarios.

I use different bags for different needs as you mentioned. This is the Calumet (brand) PRO series 440. Good for the amount I want to carry with the one (heavy) camera. Only flaw so far, The strap tends to slide off my shoulder. I'll modify it or replace it with an Op-Tec, I think.

Which store did you go to, When I am in Mass. visiting my children I always make at least one trip to Hunt's in Melrose.

In Cambridge, , Calumet Photo. just moved there from an older store around the corner. Good inventory, every sales contact is a photographer, I think. I have used them for 15 + years, always satisfied.

Right. This type of thing is frowned upon. If you see something you want in a local camera store, buy it there, especially if you take up the salesperson's time.

Jerry, I am with you 100 percent. A few bucks extra to help the local economy, keep a quality shop I need around is well worth it. Also tend to get exceptional services on returns, trials etc.

Having had my D800 for a few months, I decided I needed a new bag. I was looking for a good quality, over the shoulder bag sized to hold D800 with lens, and flash, and room for a few other things. I brought the gear to our Brick and mortar Calumet store (pretty much the best around her) and started searching. A young, very knowledgeable woman helped me try about 15 bags! I ended up with a new Calumet "PRO" bag that has worked out well. It is well constructed, lots of zippered storage pockets, seals well against our New England blizzards and included a complete , zip on rain cover. I was pleased with the Service, the product and was reminded again why I prefer to buy in a place where I see a person on the other side of the counter. Just wanted to share a positive experience.
Oh yeah, I did find several other things I "Needed"! Of Course!

OK. I'll do it! Actually, I'm getting ready to leave now.

I was at Mass General Hospital (work) all day Friday. It was a very strange day. They caught suspect #2 last evening. Things will be normalized (is that a word?) in short order.
My sense is that the terrorism sparked anger, more than fear. The populace was inconvenienced by the one day shut down, but willingly accepted it because we wanted to get the bastards!
"Boston STRONG" has become the mantra, and at least for the moment, Law Enforcement are our heroes.

I would love to meet you. I'll be at the hospital Mon-Wed, PM me if you will be in that area!

My niece was 200 ft' away from the 1st explosion..she's OK, but it shook the entire family up. We pray for all of those affected, and wait for the guilty to be caught...and they WILL be caught.

I am glad that they were safe, Coondog!

An Employee at Massachusetts General Hospital, I was on my way home as the bombing went off. Watching the coverage and talking with a number of friends that were at the scene left strong impressions. First , the immediate horror, equally important was the instantaneous response to aid the victims. First responders, volunteers, runners, spectators all spran into action to help anywhere they could. Heartbreaking yet, inspiring. It will be a long time until we feel "normal" m\again, but be assured that we may be bent, we will NOT be broken

Last I heard, Best Buy charges a 15percent re-stocking fee for returns, even if unopened with the sales slip. I try to avoid them

On the job, I carry 2, usually D800 with 70-200 and d300 with 18-55. I can't change lenses between shots. Just out for enjoyment , either one D300 with Sigma 18-200 or D800 with Nikon 28-300. Depends on whether I expect quick shots of people or composed landscape and scenics.
If carrying two, I use a Cotton Carrier harness, I find it balances the weight very well and lets me explore with no camera movement.

Good to here Al and is it better than your old job...or is it a good stress reliever.

Actually I enjoyed both, but being the chef in a hospital serving 10,000 meals a day is wearing, time for a little "stress relief".
