Lively discussion, as always!

I just removed the current head to see how it might be attached, it's not broken. The tilt/pan head attaches with a screw. I wouldn't try to remove the T-shaped stud. I would 3D print a part that clamps around and over it, with a captive metal bolt coming out the top for the ball head to screw onto.

Some of the plastic materials I print with are *quite* strong, especially PET-G, and especially if the layers are oriented correctly. There are also materials infused with carbon fiber for strength, though I haven't tried those yet. I have printed a number of adapters to connect my camera to my telescope... I have designed plastic/metal combo parts for repairing a various items. And my camera is a mid-sized Micro Four Thirds, so it and its lenses are much lighter than a DSLR. That said, I would certainly stress test it to ensure it is strong enough not to endanger my camera. I see that Manfrotto provides info on a European standard for a "safety payload" lower than the "maximum payload".

Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll design and 3D print an adapter with a 3/8" bolt.

I have a QSX 9002D tripod (which I see was made by Sunpak) with a pan-and-tilt head. I'd like to know if it can use a ball head. (I know, it's not a great tripod, but it's light and sturdy enough for me.) The head comes off but rotates around this milled "stud". From what I can see, ball heads typically attach to a 1/4" standard screw. Are there any that can attach to this kind of connector? Or does anyone make an adapter to add a 1/4" screw on top of this to accept a ball head? Probably not, but I figured y'all might know.

Thanks in advance.

Actually it was midday and they were in full sun. In #3 you can see a strong shadow, but in #1 and #2 it had clouded over a bit and my white balance was different. In post I moved the white balances closer to each other and toned down the whites, which let the color come through. I think it's just that they have more varied color than we see from a distance, they have quite a bit of that buff color.

When I first spotted the bird it was through some branches and I took a bunch like this one, partly obscured and not great. Finally I decided to move to a clearer view and hope they didn't fly away. Sure enough, as someone else commented, they were not at all afraid and I was able to shoot from a much better angle for over 10 minutes. They were still standing there when I left... you get lucky sometimes!

First time I have visited the San Joaquin Marsh in Irvine, CA. Way back in a quiet area this Great Blue Heron let me get to within about 20 feet and was quite patient during his photo shoot. I like all the different colors and textures of the plumage.

These woodpeckers were busy stuffing acorns into pre-existing holes in a power pole. After each job they launched and dove to gain speed, pretty much in my direction. Fun to watch! The facial expression looks intense.

f/10 and f/13, 221mm and 300mm, 1/2500 second. ISO 6400 because in between these I was shooting hummingbirds in partial shade.

First shot, not quite as sharp as later.

After looking at other pics from that time and location I've decided it was a Common Raven instead of a crow. Sometimes it's hard to tell unless they are near each other to compare size. But this side view from a minute earlier does show a heavier bill like a raven.

The bird was in shade, so I was lucky to get any of the shimmer on the feathers.
