First time I have visited the San Joaquin Marsh in Irvine, CA. Way back in a quiet area this Great Blue Heron let me get to within about 20 feet and was quite patient during his photo shoot. I like all the different colors and textures of the plumage.

A plus on everything especially the lighting!
Nice set. Great Blues can become quite tolerant if they are in an area frequented by lots of observers.
Actually it was midday and they were in full sun. In #3 you can see a strong shadow, but in #1 and #2 it had clouded over a bit and my white balance was different. In post I moved the white balances closer to each other and toned down the whites, which let the color come through. I think it's just that they have more varied color than we see from a distance, they have quite a bit of that buff color.
When I first spotted the bird it was through some branches and I took a bunch like this one, partly obscured and not great. Finally I decided to move to a clearer view and hope they didn't fly away. Sure enough, as someone else commented, they were not at all afraid and I was able to shoot from a much better angle for over 10 minutes. They were still standing there when I left... you get lucky sometimes!
Great shots. Love these birds.
