A brilliant capture - those civil war battlefields just cry out for great panos to capture the atmosphere - well done you !

Hi Amouk - did you use a lighting trigger, if so which and do you recommend it?

Particularly like #4 for the composition, and the memories it stirs of a great small boat trip to Alaska a few years ago.
The inside passage is definitely on the re-do list!

Very interesting subject - just wondering if a still shot from a drone above would work?
(He said, looking for an excuse to buy ...)

The last image of the fawn is really quite special - was there much work done in post (so super sharp on the download - just wondering?)

Thanks for sharing - Andrew

Some thoughts on "moments"
If shooting anywhere but in the pits and garages, long to very long lenses are a necessity..

Hi Richard - just wondering what sort of focal lengths you are referring to, and can you get away with a teleconverter?

Also, which tracks in Oz do you like to capture motorsport?

By way on introduction this is me on the white Honda about to get taken by a much better rider - hoping my photography skills will one day exceed those as a rider! - cheers, Andrew

Nice shot of an interesting bike - just not so sure they should replace James Norton (and there's a name!) as the vicar without consulting me ...

Recently sold my Triumph Daytona, and bought a much more urban friendly 300cc scooter; much more practical, but

Life moves on <big sigh>

My MacBook Pro 15 arrived during the weekend so I had a chance to jump in and go thru the setup; I must say that I am absolutely impressed. 😊

Julian - from someone just 5 minutes further up the mac road than you, my heartfelt advice -

Get, install and get used to Carbon Copy Cloner - a third party alternative to apple's time machine (which works fine), but is as slow as a wet Welsh week end if you have to do a full system restore.
With reliable hard disks these days, why would you ever need to do that?
The SSD in my MacBook Pro failed irretrievably within the first year of purchase - yes under warranty and all that, but when the nice apple support person says they will replace the hard drive for free, but do you have a full backup, it is an unbelievably happy experience to say yes and but for a trip to apple and about 2 hours of restore, your fully back in business again - if you do not have that backup, life is really horrible for a while.

I asked why the SSD failed while so new - they said they had had a few failures and the thinking was that people unplugging USB memory sticks without using the <eject> command first (which removes the normally always on constant voltage across the USB port terminals) may well generate a spark or pulse sufficient to fry the SSD. That is just a guess, but while SSD's avoid vibration and spinning problems, they are really prone to surges.

Good thing about CCC is that is will back up your laptop, your external drives, folders of images on your NAS (if you go that way) and the backups are themselves bootable. Can be set to backup on a schedule or manually and is an intuitive easy to use program - only flaw is there is no PC version, but them's the breaks.

This is the best advice anyone can give to a new mac owner - one day you will really need a bootable backup - cheers Andrew

I'm guessing but I suspect you set exposure for the lit person and/or the large lit window, and the rest of the streetscape came in with its dark and foreboding presence.

A great shot, and well done you.

Fascinates me how much macro informs the film industry - if your looking to cast your villain in a horror movie, review some great close up images - just like this one!

The third image is particularly impressive.

In download, the parts sharply in focus look great against the background, the whole mottled light thing throughout the image is a classic - well done you!

Spent a long weekend in Galveston ...

Just a thank you for image #2 - when downloaded it feels like a Turner sea scape - and he was a master painter of light.

Never been to G, but that particular image jangles old bits of song lyrics stuck in my head about Galveston (Glen Campbell?) from long ago ...

A great series and thanks again - Andrew

Thanks very much Frederick for that powerful graphic argument - like many others here I like using Luminar 3 as a plugin in Lr.

My suspicion is though that the open source models like Gimp and Rawtherapee will end up being the amateur's long term solution - big difference in what a business compared to an individual can afford.

Just a couple of questions -

1. Is there a Linux / open source photo database manager equivalent to Lightroom - maybe digiKam? and
2. Do any of those Linux applications allow "plug-ins" - such as the photo database linking and working co-operatively with an editing application like Darktable?

I suspect the Linux alternatives may be the low cost way of the future?
