I love these shots and aviaries in general.
I was trying to impress a date one day, way back, and we went in to an aviary.
I got pooped on my head. Two times. By the same bird, who tracked me and targeted me, by walking on a line that went from one wall to another. Great air, great persistence. The girl and I are still friends thirty years later.
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Funny story, glad it didn't scare off the "bird" of interrest. I try to keep an eye on what's overhead in these places.

Looking for some advice and/or tips. I’m a photo hobbyist who simply enjoys taking pictures; far from being anything close to a pro. I guess to my credit, I’ve been asked to take photos at an upcoming indoor conference, with ~250 delegates and speakers/panelists. I’m assuming the lighting will be poor- the typical spots on the podium and panelists, and low lighting on the audience. I plan to shoot with a Canon 5D, using a 70-200mm 2.8 or 24-70mm 2.8 lens. Speed lite if necessary. Manual mode…use a high ISO, aperture wide open and shutter speed of 400+. Does this seem right? Any suggestions or comments welcome as I’m a bit nervous that I’ll screw it all up. Thx in advance.
DC.

Have you done any research into the subject? A google search for "event photography tutorial" produced the following amoung others. I hope it's useful to you.

Beautiful shots! Hard to get good focus through branches like that but they add perspective, well done.

There is a video on Youtube where a gentleman openly carrying was attacked going into a store. The attacker THOUGHT this open carrying individual was going to shoot up the store and was trying to be the good guy. The attacker had to be dragged off the honest citizen before police arrived.

As an ex cop I have never liked open carry for that reason and also because if you are carrying openly anyone can come up to you, point a finger in your back and demand your out in the open firearm. Better nobody knows you are carrying as protection to you and everyone else when you may need that firearm.

Many years ago, I met a bear expert while horse camping in bear country in Wyoming. He was about 6’5”/250 pounds, carrying a .44 mag. Me: 5’7”/170. He suggested I carry a .357 Mag. Funny story: he told me about a guy he knew of that got chased by a grizzly once. The man ran down in a ditch, up the other side into a wall of brambles. Trapped. The bear ran down into the ditch; kept jumping up trying to get out of the ditch. Every time his head appeared, the man shot his .22 at the bear. After 9 rounds the bear didn’t pop up again. Forest service people came out and checked the bear. Told the guy the only reason the bear was killed was because one of the bullets had gone through an eye socket at just the right angle to pierce the brain. Who knew??

When I select
Custom settings menu -> shooting display -> d10 warm display colors -> mode1

The LCD and EVF turn deep red almost impossible to see it looks like some kind of night mode.

Much brighter in this picture than seen by the eye.

I was not expecting that. I am wondering do other Nikon z8 users have this same result?

Firmware version C1.01 LF1.00

As one other responded, get the manual. On page 598 it is explained that the feature is intended to make the display easier to read with night adapted vision.

Well, I don’t carry any firearms but I do carry one item that has been useful countless times
A cheap white plastic shower curtain liner.
It makes a great reflector, a great rain cover, a good tarp for gear or to set my bag on or for me to kneel on in mud or sand.
If it gets too grungy, I throw it away. I buy a half dozen at a time at Walmart
Not nearly as interesting as a Colt 45

good idea.

No offense to your cousin but a 45 ACP would be considered small to the bears of Alaska. That round generally is not known for penetration unless a specific bullet is loaded to give more penetration. But even still it is not considered a good caliber to STOP a bear coming toward you. If the bear has no idea you are there and it is closer than 25 yards a shot to the ear would work well. Otherwise many other calibers would be a better choice.

Dennis

True, for that case a 454 casull would be a better choice. But, the odds of an attack by a bi-pedal predator are much more likely and for that case the venerable 45 acp is an effective choice. My preference is 357 sig. but the platforms chambered for it are limited.

Thanks for kicking this off, I sometimes enjoy sharing in what people see through the camera. Here's a couple from the Pittsburgh Aviary which my wife and I visited a few days ago.

Many were busy "displaying" while we were there.

This one would seek out visitors in order to pose for them.

This one was a real chatter box and would repeat what one said to it; amazing!

OK. I checked tethering through lightroom, it works for the Z9 and Z7ii but not the Z8. That surprised me but I guess there are enough differences between the Z8 and the others to cause problems. I did find a way to use Nikon's NX Tether software (free on Nikon's site) with Lightroom by setting up Auto import in Lightroom. Here's a Youtube video that explains it:

He's Japanese so be patient with the accent; I figure if he put in the effort to learn English I can put in the effort to try and cut through the accent.

Gotta love youtube.
