What camera is it? People keep saying Canon, but you said D7100 in your post. This is for Nikon D7100:

It says in his signature line Nikon D7100.

First and third are good but I especially like the second. It gets you thinking and wondering what the story is.

I took these photos yesterday at my grandson’s high school baseball game. I had my D7100 set up just like Nasim Manusurov recommended. Specifically Shutter Priority and auto-iso. The day was a clear blue sky at about 5p.m. EDT. For whatever reason, the ISO (though I didn’t include all the photos taken) is all over the place. Even the some of the RAW photos show under-exposure. I shoot RAW+JPEG and ususally convert the RAW to JPEG using Photoshop.

So, my question to you guys and gals is: “Am I doing something wrong, or is the camera in need of an adjustment/repair?” I hope that the metadata lends some information to help you help me.

Your thoughts and consideration are appreciated.

If I was shooting this using spot I think I'd meter off the coach's white pants in the shade. Or the shady side of the building either should get your exposure closer. You could also try bracketing.

My Dad moved to PA as a teenager. Enlisted in Army upon graduation. Asked to be a photographer. His nick name in high school was Click, after all. He got his wish. Was there for Normandy, but not first wave. Was in battle of the bulge, left for Asia afterwards, photographed some on some islands, photo’d MacArthur, Ike, Hirohito, etc. He was also there for liberation at one of third reichs’ concentration camps. Ghastly pictures he brought home. One of the pictures he took is exactly the same as one in Time-Lifes big book. It showed a blackened arm and head of a burned prisoner who got that much out under a wall that had far less space than a head would need in order to get through. How that man must have suffered to go through that and then to painfully die anyway...I hear there are are those that don’t believe in the holocaust. Oughta try talking to some who saw it, up close and personal(ly). He spoke of being shot at while taking pictures and having concussive explosions from artillery nearby. Many think he had an easy time as a photog. They forget he was shooting a camera while people shot bullets in his direction. He had a .45, but was too busy with his Speed Graphic or movie camera to ever shoot the gun. There were only a few hundred war photographers during the whole war. They did all the same stuff the famous privately employed photographers did. They got less notoriety.
He married my Mom while being trained in DC. She was an emplyee of the British Admiralty. Never would tell us exactly what she did, even all those years later. She has Altzheimers now and probably no longer remembers. He died of Parkinsons’ Disease a few years ago. I always wondered about all those wartime mortar rounds and their effect... My Dad went AWOL to marry my Mom right before shipping out. Commander let it go; said it would probably never catch up to him. We haven’t heard anything yet. I think he got away with it. He was a great guy, so was my Mom. I was lucky to have them. Zillions of stories, never to be forgotten. I miss him and her.
That’s the short of it. He later was a great salesman, sold everything. After the war, electrolux and fuller brush. Succeeded there as everywhere. They sacrificed for me to go to college, grad school and law school. On and on. Those who were bored or stopped reading; I understand. We all have our stories. Btw, his parents emigrated from Sicily. No English. No money. Ellis Island, the whole bit. The parents were 14/15 when they got here, betrothed. The American story. His brother became a Doctor, served in Army, as well. I WILL stop now. Remember Scruples, you asked...

Facinating. Among many things, it's posts like your's and Scruples that make this interesting.
As for the original post Scuba Stephan FWIW as you said "you just need to get out there and shoot." Personally I don't shoot a lot differently with digital than I did with film.
Use the things you already know from your previous camera and learn as you go.

Before you tell me not to listen to this Tony guy let me explain. He has the controversy topic of crop sensor which caused a lot of disagreement but I don't want to talk about that. His latest claim that ISO is fake and I email him asking him to do a test of his cameras and see if they conform to the ISO standard and heard nothing back from him.
I don't see how ISO is fake because.
1. The ISO organization is real and based in Switzerland.
2. There is the ISO standard for digital still cameras and the latest is ISO 12232:2019 published Feb 2019.
3. Unless you test the cameras against this standard and they don't meet the standard then you can't claim that they are fake.

Personally I still equate ASA and ISO, I pushed and pulled ASA when shooting film, and look at ISO on digital as the same, push with film grain with digital noise. As far as the Tony and Chelsea videos some are great like the 5 worst types of photographers, hilarious, others take with a grain of salt.

If you are a professional photographer, the status of having your image on the cover or inside pages of NG is priceless.

Take away "professional" and it becomes: if you are a photographer the status of having your image on the cover or inside pages of NG is priceless. It becomes much more meaningful.

Everybody seems to venerate the word professional. They have the best, they use the best, they know everything, if the professional doesn't know it, or have/use it, it isn't worth having or using, or knowing.

The truth is to be a professional doesn't mean anything except that you've sold a picture of something to someone. When I was an art student I sold two paintings one to my aunt and the other to a friend of my mother, so I guess I'm a professional artist, right? :)

Change professional to competent or expert it becomes more apt. I've seen pictures on this site that are every bit as good or better that those produced by "professional photographers," even those in NG.
I've read comments on this sight that prove that many here are experts. As many have said a great photographer is going to take great pictures whether using a 50k Hasselblad or a pinhole box with a sheet of film. Even if they've never sold a picture.

What really makes a "professional photographer" is being in the right place at the right time, luck, or knowing how to market themselves. The great equipment, and most of the knowledge comes later.

Back on point, if you are a photographer the status of having your image on the cover of inside pages of NG IS priceless. The only thing stopping many here (including me) from achieving that is that even though competent or expert, they don't believe they can, they fall for the "professional" myth.

End of rant.

Thank you all for the input. I guess I can’t go wrong on either choice. Just wish I had a few more $$$$ to make choice easier. So if my customers want larger pictures printed I would be better off with a fx.

When using the d300 biggest I've gone is 24x30, bigger a medium format negative is better. I printed those from the 300 as gifts, from a couple of wedding I shot for my sister and also my former brother-in-law and his new wife. They came out beautifully, but I used a pro lab not a printer for the work. Haven't enlarged any from the 800e yet but suppose it'll be similar.

I am having to upgrade but can't afford the top of the line equipment like D4s, D5 or D850. I shoot weddings, outdoor portraits, landscape and wildlife, sporting events, street and residential home sales and family vacation. I do shoot alot in low light and have a few flashguns and reflectors. I was thinking of going to the D810 or D750 used or refurbed and also toy'ed with the idea of the D500. I can only afford one and all the reviews on the web sites that sell I don't value much the reviews as most seem fake or embellished. I have been shooting digital for 11 years. Prior to that I shot 35mm film. Love the D90 but want to take it to the next level. Also what is the max print size for any of the above camera formats (FX or DX)?

I shot for 10 years with a d300 which is similar to the d90, using FX glass mostly from my FSLR'S went to digital from F100. My suggestion would be a d300 which is much like your d90. I went to an d800e purely because I wanted full frame, and it's a good choice too. IMO none of the newer bodies do enough different or better than the d300 and especially the d800e with good glass, to justify the cost really.

Thanks, yet the Domke F2 seems huge. Advertised as up to 2 bodies and 6-12 lenses. Seems monstrous. I have big bags, looking for more compact. This is to be specific for 1 body with of the 3 lenses attached and 2 in the bag ready to go.

Within a year of buying my first ever camera (1980 - Nikon FM) I was a full-on photo fanatic. Friends saw this and asked me then, had I not bought the Nikon, what camera brand/model would I have rather bought.
We have a number of other "old-timers" here and I was wondering if any have pondered this question themselves. Back then, what 35mm format camera would you have bought if money was not an issue?

I chose my nikon FM over a Leica because of the viewfinder and not a rangefinder mostly
For me, at the time, I had a huge "crush" on three other cameras, curiously all with German ancestry. My choices were: Rollieflex SL35 E, Contax 167MT, and Leica R3 Safari.

Luckily for me, I didn't know anything about any of them at the time I bought the FM. All of those companies went out of the camera making business some time back. Thank-you, Nikon, for hanging in there.

Thanks... this has been the most helpful answer so far.
I'm most curious as to why the newer one is more expensive but seemingly significantly less sharp in the tests.

To be clear, I am not interested in the 50mm f/1:1.8 model or any other 50mm lenses.
I am specifically interested in the 50m f/1.4 either the version D or G - trying to understand the difference between these two models.

Biggest difference D has an aperature ring and can be used on manual bodies too and the G doesn't and can't. Or as Ken Rockwell says the G has been gelded.

If it's here and as popular or more popular in 30 40 50 years and I'm still around at 100-125, I'll admit I was wrong. :) I'm pretty sure all those people happily shooting rangefinders in '59 and the early 60's considered the Nikon FSLR a fad too.
