I was fondling my camera this morning and thinking about naming conventions when I noticed the B on my mode dial and tried to remember when was the last time I squeezed the " Bulb ". Does anyone squeeze bulbs anymore or is just a term that has just hung on because it has universal meaning and everyone is aware of its purpose. Expand this to the debate as to the demise of the death of ISO and irregardless of TOTAL invariance of ALL sensors in the future, ISO is not going away because it preserves the continuity of the exposure scheme as we know it. I don't want to turn a dial to select sensitivity level 1 or 2 and so on... Names stick, and as long as everyone is on board who cares. Now off to the "Ice Box " for the leftovers wrapped in " Tin Foil ".
The next time you need an exposure longer than 30-seconds and you're using your wired remote to open and close the shutter, you'll remember why this capability exists ...

Haha. For my SLRs I had a bulb release. No screw (mounting) port in the shutter buttons on the electronic cameras. Just a term that hung on... and I suppose always will.

You're talking about 2 different things.
1. As for Bulb I can still use a bulb shutter release on my Nikon Df. It's more than 5 year old but it's still in current production. However, I never had a bulb type cable release since I bought my first camera in 1977. So it's just a term, we understood it so keep it that way.
2. As for ISO it's still valid even if you can underexpose and adjust in post and have the same result. It's there so you know how much you have to adjust if you set your camera to lower ISO. So even if some day you can use your camera always at base ISO and adjust in post to whatever level you need to get your pictures the ISO is still valid and useful.

Come on Paul, the point was how outdated names hang on despite possible new meanings and adaptations.... We all know WHAT the B does. I use it all the time but I don't recall squeezing a bulb.

Ah, some of the Fuji X-T cameras have female threads in the shutter button.
My X-T 20 and X-T 2 do. I just screw in soft release buttons in mine.

Take a long exposure then tell me if "B" is real. There are many times that a long exposure is needed. There are times when I wanted to create a smear BG then pop off the flash. So, "B" isn't fake.

NO ONE is questioning what B does; POINT IS is that it doesn't mean Bulb anymore; THAT is the jist of the entire topic; outdated names that EVERYONE knows the meaning irregardless of what they are called.
A bulb by any other name would not trip the shutter so long ...

And the point is ? Who ever said anyone forgot what this setting means. Obviously no one even reads the responses before injecting an opinion; I have explained at least twice what the topic was all about. I am done with explanations.
Remember...B stands for Bulb....and B also stands for Brief. Both terms used in pre -digital years.

Sorry to tell you this, but the Df went out of production last September in order to convert its production line over to the new Z6 mirrorless camera.

No sorry! It's good to know. I don't know if they still make it but what I really meant is that it still in current Nikon line up. I should have got another one when I was in Japan few weeks ago. I could get a brand new one for $1900. While I knew that Nikon will service it I don't know Japanese and the salesperson doesn't know enough English to tell me if I would get the international warranty.

No its not yet discontinued, just out of production is all. No more will be made. Df2? Hoping so, eventually.
