Far from me to disagree with many of you, but my wife & I go to Rome almost annually — some years twice and other European cities regularly and I always carry my DLSR w/Black Rapid strap. I am on the dark side of 75 and — to this point— able to travel unmolested & undeterred by the criminal element. Simply a matter of common sense & traveling where (& when) a normally sensible person would be. No post midnight walks, no “exploring” of remote, unfamiliar areas. I have with me today ( in a major European city) my D750 w/Nikon 24-70 lens. Could lightning strike today? Of course, but normal precautions should prevail.

Travel well, travel safely, travel often! I apologize in advance to those who are put off by my observations.

We were in Paris two years ago and spent some time in this magnificent edifice, and quiet a lot of time shooting the periphery. A dramatically stunning building that hopefully can be restored to near its past beauty. We will be back in July and I hope to see some progress.

We have traveled to Israel / Holy Land twice. Last time, took a D300S with 17-55mm f/2.8. So I didn't take a long lens and can't say I particulary missed it. Need fast lens because a lot of photo ops are indoors.

There are a lot of interesting things and people to photograph! I predict you will enjoy the trip!

My wife and I go to Europe twice a year and I take the Nikon DLSR I am using at the time. Right now it is a D750 with a Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8. I also take a Nikkor 50.f/1.8 as a back-up. That, with some cropping, does all that I am capable of. When I was shooting crop, I took, for example, a Nikon D300S and a Nikkor 17-55f/2.8 (w/the same Nikkor 50mm.) That keeps me occupied and I get enough "keepers" to do a slide show that reflects our travels.

I too bought from them (thru Amazon); bought a used D700 and had no problems with the transaction. This was several years ago, before I even heard anything about them to scare me. Almost 100% sure that I would not buy from them again, given the deplorable track record. Maybe they wouldn't scam me (due to what I bought might be protected via Amazon), but wouldn't want to let them profit from my purchases.

As RichardTaylor said on the first page, "If you can afford it - it doesn't really matter.." My first Nikon was a point & shoot I got as a present and I subsequently went from that to a D50 and now, some 20 years later, got a D750 during the Christmas sale. Never regretted any of the upgrades, nor the lenses necessary to accompany the cameras.

I have had experience with 3 brands: someone mentioned earlier the Scott - E brand. Nicely constructed but too hot for this climate (Texas); Orvis (winter season) has a "game bag" on the back that handles some large lens; Royal Robbins brand...my favorite w/multiple European trips. Works well!

We have been there twice times -- both times with a Nikon D90 and a crop lens; I was neither noticed nor questioned. I did not take a tripod, so that (along with previously mentioned reflectors and lamps) should protect you.

It has some interesting things to shoot.

I bought a new D750 this year (holiday pricing) from Competitive Camera here in Dallas, but I have purchased both new (D90, 24-120mm) & used (D700, 24-70f2.8) from Amazon and have been pleased.

(Perhaps "not getting stung" = "been pleased.")

I have this lens; I bought it off E-Bay several years ago & don't remember the price. It is heavy and I mainly use it for talking shots of my grandkids in school plays and such. Never tried it for outdoor sports and frankly, never really considered it in lieu of a 70-200 (I bought it when it was a lot less expensive than the 70-200). That lens is on my list and I may make the switch when the spirit moves me. I bought a holiday-priced D750, but have not tried the 80-200 with it yet.

Thanks for the tour! I particularly liked the Calore River arch and the Madonna shots!

Merry Christmas
