I love these huge Perennial Hibiscus blooms; about 8" in diameter. The other flowers are Coneflowers and Rose of Sharon.

(From my bedroom window, the Rose of Sharon look just like the Hibiscus but much smaller.)

Thanks, everyone. Plenty to read up on now.

Cheers,

A photog friend told me about a new photo file format called JPEG XL, which claims to have smaller files and backward compatibility with the current JPEG standard.

Has anyone heard anything about this?

This begs the question, will be able to upgrade my Canon Rebel T6 to save in this format?

To have a clean slate on any computer, a fresh, clean installation is needed, always.

Setting? The laptop was set up as RAID-0. I need two drives, as I always separate my data from the software and OS. The temp files go to a partition on the main drive (0). This way, backing up is a snap.

That I have to fiddle with the bios to activate the second drive is a hassle no one should have to go through.

I've run into extra drives/partitions not being recognized on a new, clean install of windows. If I recall correctly, you can specify a new size of the partition where Windows is installed at the very beginning of the setup process. If you have an actual separate physical drive, it's better that it be present when you run the install. I've had a rather difficult time getting the second drive recognized after the install.

You might want to post your questions on TenForums.com. It's a great site with lots of very knowledgeable people. I've always got the solution when I've posted problems.

[quote=kenpic]Supermoon alert: Share your view tonight.

When Earth's shadow begins to cover it, Luna often takes on a reddish tint, leading to the name
"blood moon" for those rare times when a lunar eclipse aligns with a full moon.

Lunar eclipses are indeed rare, but ALWAYS occur at a full moon.

Very good shots. I'm nearby in Montgomery county and I love log houses. (I've even built one from scratch in Vermont.) Where are these houses? I'd love to see 'em and take some pictures.

One drive ≠ OneDrive

There is an excellent utility called Beyond Compare (http://scootersoftware.com). It has a free 30-day trial, and then you can opt to purchase a basic version for $30 or a more capable version for $60. It's not a subscription, it's a one-time purchase. From their website, it's described thusly: "Compare files and folders using simple, powerful commands that focus on the differences you're interested in and ignore those you're not. Merge changes, synchronize files, and generate reports."

I found the learning curve to be fairly easy. I use it most often for comparing current versions of files and folders with backups on external drives.

I recently presented a beginners workshop on photography, stressing only very basic fundamentals such as light, subject and some composition pointers. I'd like to follow-up by sending them some links to very basic editing tools that are free and easy to use for beginners who are most likely to shoot jpg only. Any suggestions? I started editing my photos with Picasa years years ago then transitioned to the more sophisticated (and difficult to learn) Lightroom. It's not for beginners.

Microsoft Office Picture Manager was a very basic photo editor that was included in most editions of MS Office up until 2013. It's no longer included in Office, but you can get it free as part of a download of MS Sharepoint Designer 2013. Sharepoint Designer has lots of components that were commonly part of those earlier editions of Office, but you can do a custom installation and choose to install only Picture Manager. You can download it here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35491.

I use the Auto Correct button to brighten photos. Also, you can crop, control brightness, contrast, and color, rotate & flip, red eye removal, and resize and compress.

It's easy to learn & use, and contains the tools I need for most of my editing. Occasionally I will use a more robust tool, but Picture Manager is my go to tool 95% of the time.

Just how old of a camera is this you two have? I use now where near my limits. And use 16, 32, 64 GB cards in my cameras, and I know many people use 128 GBs.

This camera was purchased in 2006 and has served me well. I still use it for it's 12x optical zoom and 48x digital zoom.

But it took me a while to figure out that it's limited to a max 1Gb SD card. Heck, you can't even GET 1Gb SD cards anymore.

From what I'm reading, it looks like if you use a card bigger than 1GB, TIFF files will make everyone look like "Shrek", like your example you posted, but JPEG files are fine with bigger cards (but I'd stick with 2GB or smaller). TIFF files are not the same as raw files. I'm guessing here, but suspect this camera saves as 8 bit color and won't have the latitude to correct sucessfully.

I have the same camera and encountered the same exact problem when I used an SD card bigger than 1Gb. Checking the manual confirms that the biggest SD card supported is 1Gb.
