JPEG XL - New, Better File Format

A photog friend told me about a new photo file format called JPEG XL, which claims to have smaller files and backward compatibility with the current JPEG standard.

Has anyone heard anything about this?

This begs the question, will be able to upgrade my Canon Rebel T6 to save in this format?

Search New jpeg - several threads here on UHH.

Only if Canon releases a new firmware to allow that (I really doubt they will).

UHH Search returns topics with any of your key words in the title. I used a few different searches, but of the results I received, nothing applied to OP's query.

I also couldn't find a UHH topic by using Google's Advanced Search, with several words, including jpeg xl.

There are easily found online articles elsewhere, however. Three are linked below:

This is the third time I have seen this mentioned on the HOG in a week.

Thanks, everyone. Plenty to read up on now.

Cheers,

Here's a link to a thread I posted on that a few days ago with a bit of discussion following. What your friend maybe did not get right is that the smaller JPEG XL is also better quality (more color and dynamic range stored) than the old JPEG.

quixdraw, that would seem like a reasonably good suggestion. However, I've found that the UHH search function is sorely short of being useful.
