I am not trying to be a jerk here and I am grateful that people want to respond to my original post but I am puzzled by responses. My post is very clear on the info for which I am looking yet, I get all of these responses that have nothing to do with the information I am seeking. First I get replies on weight and price which I never requested. I think I can look at the weight/price of canon lens + adapter vs the sony. Then someone states something about the Sony being manual, which it isn't. More responses that have nothing to do with my original post. I am truly puzzled.

Please refer to the title of my message. It states sony zeiss 50mm 1.4 Planar e mount, which is an auto focus lens. Have you had real life experience between that lens and the canon I mentioned?

BTW, Zeiss itself does make auto focus lenses for the sony e mount. Guess you have never heard of the Zeiss Batis lenses.

The Canon lens is spectacular from about f/2 and smaller. Unless cost is a limiting factor, I'd go with the Sony.

Thank you.

Either lens would be a good choice. Get the one YOU want and not the one I'd pick. Try before you buy is a good solution for splitting-hairs in some circumstances. It only has to please you first & foremost.

Thank you

And add the cost and weight of an adapter to the Canon

Thank you for your response. I understand the weight and cost parameters. The weight of the canon to sony e mount adapter plus the lens is roughly the same as the Sony lens. The cost would be a couple of hundred more.

Per my original post, I am looking for people who have done their own real life comparison. Have you done such a comparison?

My 2 cents worth from renting the Canon a couple times. It is a stellar lens but very heavy. Didn't buy one because of that then and how much I thought I'd use it. Been thinking about getting one now that my interest in subjects to photograph are changing.

Thank you for your response. I guess from your response that you have not done a side by side? You have just tried the Canon?

I am looking at purchasing one of these 50mm lenses in the title for my Sony a7r iv. Has anyone done a side by side comparison of the two on their Sony? If so, what did you like and dislike about each? I prefer to hear about real life experiences from those of you here on the hog. I know native lenses usually perform better but that canon sure does seem tempting to me. Thank you.

Wasn’t sure if I should post this in this section or “For Sale” section but could use some help. I am in a situation where I may need to sell my camera and lens which I love dearly and are in great condition. How do I go about accurately assessing the right asking price? Just for the heck of it I went out to one of the known retailers to get a quote and it was, as expected ridiculously low. I know that’s because they resell so again just did it to do it. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Thank you to all of you for your responses. They all make perfect sense.

Look at Ebay sold prices. That is what your camera is worth on the market.

Check to see what your gear is selling for on ebay, MPB, KEH, etc. You will most always get a quote less than what you want? Cameras depreciate just like cars do. Once, you discover the price ranges, low and high, you can set a price. And see what happens. Yes, the seller has to make a profit on your gear. Good luck.

Thank you for your suggestion.

Look for sale prices from the dealers that you got Buy prices from. Also check sold prices on eBay.
You won’t get as much as the dealers are charging but you will have an idea of what your equip is worth.
Also check on here. There has been a lot of equip sold here.....good luck.

Thank you for your response. Duh, I should have thought about that... I think my head is still clogged from my recent flu.

I am looking for Sony E mount lenses. I have the 50mm but need a wide angle for real estate photography. Does anyone have one for sale? Recommendations on a good one for that purpose welcome

Sigma Art 16-24mm 2.8 sony fe is a fantastic lens or the Zeiss Batis 18mm 2.8. . Sigma is newer and $1399 while used batis 18mm in great condition can be had in the $1000 to $1100 range.

To add to my post i should add an answer to the op’s original question. Before the sony I owned, i had a nikon d750 and did use the Sigma 50mm art on it. The lens had slight focus issues here and there. Maybe 20% of the time but, when the focus was on point the other 80% of the time, it produced some very nice images. I did try using the focus adjustment capability but it was time consuming and didnt result in any major improvement. If the sigma is what is in your budget then i say go for it as long as you get if from a reputable dealer with a favorable return policy just in case you need to use it. Good luck.

If anyone is considering renting photo equipment, I highly recommend LensRentals.com. I recently rented a Nikon D850 with a Nikkor 24-70 zoom lens from them for a 5-day rental. Because I told them that there might be a risk that nobody would be there to sign for the package on the day the rental period started, they voluntarily shipped it about 4 or 5 days early, no extra charge! The gear was in great shape, well packed in a sturdy padded case, everything you might need included (manual, charger, etc.) and the return logistics couldn't have been easier -- even the packaging tape was provided! Great communication all the way through. Not only were their prices excellent, they just emailed me a discount coupon for 10% off of my next rental!
One happy customer! This was for an annual event, and I'll definitely be using them for from now on, plus any other photographic rentals I need.
Oh, and they give you a discounted price if you decide to buy the equipment.

I recently rented a sony e mount 100mm-400mm lens from Lens Rentals and process was so straightforward and easy. The lens i received was in great shape. I was able to get some great shots of my daughter's university graduation. Nailed pic’s of her receiving her diploma and walking in the processional. Great memories, from a great lens supplied by great company, Lens Rentals. Thank you Lens Rentals!
