About a year ago I compared one with a 55 f/1.4 Zeiss Otus. I bought the Zeiss.

I would expect that one of what is believed to be the best lenses ever in the Zeiss would beat the Sigma Art. That said, there is about a $3,000+ price difference. And of course the Zeiss is a purely manual lens. However, price is a consideration that most people have to take into account. I myself compared the Sigma Art 50mm to the Sony Zeiss 50mm 1.4 for my Sony a9. I looked at these two with a budget in mind. While i think the Sigma is a wonderful lens, i felt the Sony Zeiss was better. Great microcontrast, color, a bit better bokeh and that zeiss like certain something. These two lenses were both in my range of budget so I chose what I liked best. Now, i am lucky to be able to afford a budget that can have that $400 - $500 difference in affordability but i am not sure most everyone else has that ability. I certainly dont think if someone is looking at the Sigma that they have the ability to afford another $3,000+ for the Otus. If they did, they wouldnt even bother looking at the sigma.
Net, net, i think your comparison and decision is meaningless to the op and avg buyer unless they are lucky enough to have that kind of disposable income. I would say most don't have the same luxury as you.
Sigma Art lenses are very good but I prefer what the manufacturers make for their cameras.
To add to my post i should add an answer to the op’s original question. Before the sony I owned, i had a nikon d750 and did use the Sigma 50mm art on it. The lens had slight focus issues here and there. Maybe 20% of the time but, when the focus was on point the other 80% of the time, it produced some very nice images. I did try using the focus adjustment capability but it was time consuming and didnt result in any major improvement. If the sigma is what is in your budget then i say go for it as long as you get if from a reputable dealer with a favorable return policy just in case you need to use it. Good luck.

Other than the Zeiss (about $ 4,000) this is the BEST 50 money can buy. My personal experience is that all The Sigma ART lenses are great or spectacular! I own this lens an it blows the Nikon away. Best of luck.

That is a very fine lens but it's manual focus only. For those requiring AF, the Sigma is obvious the better choice of the two.

Yes... on a D800. Superb lens! Better than the Nikon. Some keepers that were salable. Enjoy it!!!

I read several reviews comparing the Sigma Art 50 for Canon EF mount. They all were of one accord, it was the best, excluding perhaps the high priced Z. I purchased mine from KEH and have been extremely pleased with results, though I haven’t shot very much with it.
I own this lens and it is magnificent. It's heavy though but still quite manageable. I use it on my Canon R and with the adapter it works really well. Worth the bucks.
Thanks to all for your kind consideration and thorough responses...I have a Nikon 750 and D500...I will report back on how I feel after using for a few thousand images...

Perhaps the OP insists on f/1.4 or maybe he
simply believes that ALL the available "super
normals" are built as f/1.4. So maybe this a
a bit of news only for others reading here, if
those others are rather budget constrained,
but anywho ......
There is an excellent "Junior Super Normal"
distagon-type lens from Tamron: 45/1.8 SP
which also happens to include excellent OIS.
Officially $600, but sometimes $400 on sale.
Originally bought one for Nikon, no great
expectations optically but wanting an OIS
normal lens .... which Nikon doesn't offer.
After discovering its great optics, I bought
another one, in EF mount.
To wit ....

Well I don't know about the Art version, but I have Sigma's regular 50mm and I love it!

I don't own the 50mm but I do own the 35mm ART lens AND it is no better than a lot of other good glass available and very expensive! In fact, the Samyang 35mm (manual) lens outperforms the Sigma 35mm ART WRT image quality, at least when used for astrophotography.

Like one of the other respondents, I too, prefer to use Nikkor lenses with my Nikon D850. However, the 50mm is an exception. Nikon's 50mm is not all that great. Enter the Sigma 1.4 50mm Art which I purchased a few years ago. OMG, I can only say that with my D850, the photos are razor sharp.......unbelievable. The drawback (you knew there would be one, right?) is that this "beast" is heavy. But wow, tack sharp. I did not spend so much money on the D850 for anything less than tack sharp.
