I recently learned that using this cheaper 50mm f/1.8 lens (Version II) will often provide a circular rainbow effect when shooting into the sun.

For those in-the-know, is this unique to the Version II model only, or is this also true of the newer STM version? I hate buying an outdated version of a lens, but if only the Version II does this, especially considering the price, I have no problem doing so.

Thx in advance!

You must have a nicer family then me, because mine is brutally honest!

Sounds like it may do the job. I will give it a try. Thanks!

First time scanning prints (Epson Perfection V600). I am noticing that any prints with surface residue (i.e., water marks, sticky stuff from photo albums, etc.) do not bode well as far as the final scan product.

I watched a YouTube video that suggested cleaning slides with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Not sure that would work so well on prints? Any experience out there with this issue? Suggestions? Thanks!

Note: I have found the "Dust Removal" feature of Epson Scan to be useless for this purpose, or any purpose for that matter.

Actually for product photography I painted my studio area black to avoid random bounced light from interferring with my set ups. What ever color you select make sure you have a solid reason for making the choice you end up with.

Thanks for the "thinking outside the box" suggestion BBBruce77, but as photography is not my business but rather my pleasure, and the home studio will be dual purpose, I do not think the better half will buy off on black walls.

To clear up any confusion, I intend to use the ceiling and side walls to allow me more control with my off camera flash units. I do not intend to use the white wall as my backdrop as I have multiple backdrops for that purpose. I have no intention of upgrading to expensive lighting as my only subjects will be family, and mostly grandkids at that. Off camera flash works great for my purposes.

Thanks to all for your replies!

For those in-the-know, or even better those with studio experience, what sheen of white paint is best for bouncing light (i.e., flat, satin, semi-gloss, etc.)? And I am assuming the whiter the better on the paint color? Thx!

I have the Sidekick that I use with my Sirui ball head. It works great with my Sony A7r III, Sony 100-400 zoom lens and 1.4 converter. I went with the Sidekick instead of a complete gimbal because of size and weight for my upcoming trip to Kodiak. Trying to pack as light as possible due to weight restrictions on a floatplane and also my back. The Sidekick slips on and off the Arca Swiss style mounting plate on my ball head in seconds eliminating having to swap out the entire gimble and ball head assembly.

I use the Induro equivalent to the Sidekick (GHBA Gimbal Head - cheaper but virtually identical quality and function).

Like Goober, I went with this option over the full due to the convenience of both use and packing in my camera bag.

I think the bottom line is, is birding your primary photography interest, or like me just one of many. If primary, go with the full gimbal setup. If occasional, the Sidekick or equivalent works great for me.

As far as a comment by a responder that he/she would not use it with larger lenses, my experience suggests that is a non-issue. The Arca-Swiss plate mounted to my 100-400mm lens carries the lions share of the weight and aides with balancing. Perhaps some balancing issues would arise with some of the crazy large telephoto lenses, but not a concern with the lens you mentioned.

Looking for user feedback from anyone who owns this lens, and especially from those with a Dual Pixel AF DSLR.

Technical reviews I am seeing are not that stellar, but user reviews appear to be overwhelmingly in the 5-star range?

My primary use would be as a video lens on the 5d Mark IV.

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Searched this lens on UHH and only found some new release chatter but no actual user/owner feedback. So, can anyone who owns or who has had the occasion to use this lens provide some feedback/impressions/experience?

Not interested in feedback on the Sigma variable aperture f4.5-5.6 lens.

Thanks in advance!

I have been looking at some 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses (Canon/Sigma) and am confused.

Specifications indicate "Aperture Range: f/2.8 to f/22". However, descriptive comments state "a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range as well as greater control over depth of field". These seem contradictory to me?

What am I missing or not understanding? I believe it is referring to the end of the lens staying in a fixed position as opposed to extending in and out. But I am not understanding the difference.

Can someone enlighten me? Thx in advance!

For those who may be new to Luminar 2018, I have provided a link to a series of 9 short videos to get you started. I like Mr. Morganti's instruction style as he keeps it simple, "Luminar for Dummies" so to speak.

Interesting Morrobayrich. This does not appear to apply in my case. Within LR when I choose Photo > Edit in > (Select Plug-in) as I do with all my other plug-ins, I do not get the needed "Cancel/Apply" buttons. I must take the path as indicated by a6k above to get them.

Hopefully the 2018 version of Luminar will address/correct this issue.
