I would trust the Lensrentals comparison, but the fact that one is better than the other does not indicate there will be a problem. Additionally, to be technical, one would need to define weather sealing against what. For instance, is it rain, humidity, water from underneath, etc. My hunch would be some are better sealed in some areas but not as well in others. The suggestion to reach out to the two Sony ambassadors as one can't get much more out there than Paul Nicklen. Reaching out to Steve Perry is a good idea and I'd recommend Mark Smith as another reference who I'd trust (search for his bird photography on Youtube).

I guess for me, I'm sure there are better sealed cameras than my Sony A1 (and a9ii, a99ii, a99, a700 and a100 before it), but I haven't had a problem nor have the majority whom I've followed or read. From my perspective it's more of a theoretical problem than a real one. Finally, I have no interest in an extended warranty as I prefer to insure all of my equipment for all damage, loss or theft, including water damage.

Have heard back from Mark S. a few hours ago. He used his Sony equipment in CR last year for a few weeks and didn't have any problems. He also shoots a lot locally on the beaches in Florida and so far no problems. Haven't heard back from Steve P. or other bloggers I've contacted yet. Steve just did an extensive review on the A1 but no mention of weather resistance. I did notice paint chipping off of his A1 camera after only a few months use. As far as the techs are concerned they feel Nikon is better weather sealed than Sony models. I will be in Continuously damp, misty and sometimes rainy conditions for several months at a time. As a Nikon user I always felt protected from the weather. Either a camera is weather sealed or not. I have not Viewed the actual warranty and Sony did mention lite rain conditions being covered and that's all that really matters in my case. I'll just keep the equipment covered as needed so I can get the most out of it.......

Answered my own question. I reached out to LensRentals and talked to the technician department. They stated that the Nikon D850 was better weather sealed than the Sony A1. I then reached out to Sony tech and they basically agreed. The only work around is to purchase the extended warranty if I wanted to protect the camera longer than the 1 year warranty that comes with the camera purchase. Basically $200 for 3 yrs extended or $400 for Full coverage if dropped or damaged. Basic warranty covers normal use in rain conditions, but like all manufactures not covered if dropped in the water.
Just a heads up to the folks that are wanting to make the move to Sony, keep warranty up if working under wet conditions. There are time limits on the warranty purchases as well.
Thanks to everyone that responded........

See https://www.slrlounge.com/lensrentals-does-a-tear-down-finds-the-kink-in-the-sony-a7riii-weather-sealing-armour/ I did follow Roger’s suggestions on sealing the base, and I would be surprised if the A1 wasn’t better. Actually might be worth asking him about the A1. They know what comes back broken.

Thanks, Good Info.....

I think what you are asking goes beyond the amateur level. I was fine with my a7riii in a dripping ice cave in Iceland, but you are looking for reliability over an extended period and a difficult environment. My suggestion would be to reach out to Sony Ambassadors, https://alphauniverse.com/ambassadors/ like Renan Ozturk or Paul Nicklen. They depend on their gear and spend extensive time in difficult environments, and are more likely to be using the new A1. Good luck, this goes way beyond bucket lists, more like dream fulfillment. Look forward to seeing your posts

Yes, I've reached out to several bloggers who live and breathe photography but the ones you mention did not come up on my radar. I will reach out to them. Appreciate the help......
PS Life is short. If I wait until full retirement I may not be able to hike in the mountains of CR or elsewhere like I can now. Not to mention the severe weather changes I have witness in the cloud forrest.

I can’t speak to to A1, but I’ve used my A6500 in the rain and snow with my Tamron 28-75 (also weather sealed) and it’s been fine. Dries off and keeps on going. I would expect the A1 to do at least as well.

Thanks jaredjacobson
I have found video on YouTube water testing and comparing Nikon, Cannon and Sony cameras. For the Sony they used the A7RIII and found that water was leaking down from the top of the camera into the battery compartment. After several test the camera failed and stopped working. I'm still hoping to find real life testing on the A1 as a lot of my images will be taken in damp to wet/light rain conditions. I don't abuse my equipment but I use it to the max. My Nikon D850 has not failed under the conditions mentioned, and if I want to stick with my goal I'll have to be sure the equipment will hold up.

Long story short I'm in the process of selling home and down sizing. Along with this is I'm taking a year off work starting in April 2022 and going full on wildlife photography. I'm starting in Costa Rica and other parts of Central America along with Alaska and traveling the states. My biggest concern is the ruggedness of the New Sony equipment. Nikon has been around for a long time and the equipment can be used in all types of weather conditions. I will be spending a lot of time in the wet cloud and rain forrest in Central America. I was set on Sony equipment for so many reasons, like frame rate, lock on eye for animals focusing and lighter weight as I approach 61yrs old. Now Nikon has released the Z9 and having watched all the videos it looks to be comparable to the Sony A1 for frame rate and focusing abilities. It's still heavier, I would still need a converter for all of my Nikon lens including the 600mm f/4 I will purchase. That said the Z9 looks rugged and should hold its ground with the damp and light rain conditions I would use it in. My question Has Anyone used the Sony A1 under the conditions I intend to use my equipment in?? I have reached out to bloggers on the web that use the A1 and 600mm combo, but thought I would try here as well in case some of you have used the Sony equipment mentioned under harsh conditions. I've already watched Steve Perry's video and have reached out to him as well. Hopefully someone here can help and I will relay info as I receive as well.
PS I'm Not looking for what the specs say about equipment.. Only Real Life Experience.. Thank You, Martin..

Yeah I've Heard of People Doing That kind of Thing ? Like Putting the Smaller Csnera Bags or Cases inside a Gym Bag / Duffle Bag or Grip type Bag as camouflage !!! Obviously if your Packing a Really Big Case ? That might not be An Option ? But otherwise One Could Get a. SECOND hand Grip Bsg from a Goodwill store or a Thrift Shop and If it has Stains on it or paint Splatters that's just extra camouflaging you don't need too do ? It Gives the Impression that its Old beat up and not Carrying anything Worth Stealing inside !!!! Too each their own Taste but I'd look for Something a little More on the Discreet Side as opposed to Something with A Famous Logo of Athletic Shoe And Sports Clothes Mfrs !!! You want to Not attract Attention or Interest !!! Indeed even Old Backpacks that would Fit your case or Camera bag either Surplus or Second Hand might be More Discreet !!! But preferably something That Doesn't Scream camera Backpack either? The Styrofoam Cooler Is Good as Well and I may borrow That one !!! Thanks for the Suggestions And Good Evening everyone @@!
Yeah I've Heard of People Doing That kind of Thin... (show quote)

I use a real thick styrofoam cooler as it keeps the equipment from baking. It also keeps the lens from fogging as I travel from point a to point b with the AC on in the van or car, I live in Florida and vehicle temps are extreme. Equipment just stays at an average temp.

When I'm on the road shooting and caring multiple cameras and lens all expensive I keep a totally beat up styrofoam cooler in the car or van in full view with extra equipment inside. Have never been broken into. I have had new shinny tools of all shapes and sizes stolen off of work sites, but never a well used looking tool. Just saying sometimes the best camouflage is old and worn look...........

I'm interested to hear members views on replacing a background / foreground to create a new image and whether the 'new' image should be allowable in a club competition?

I don't currently have a view either way, but I feel Pandora's Box has been opened. If I were to shoot a fox in my garden, then a Badger a few minutes later would you be able to tell if I shott the 'background' independently - then pasted a fox or a badger onto it. Editing is only going one way at the moment.

I would expect, in the case of a competition entry all components of the final image to be the work of one author.

I belong to a club and it's aloud in it's own category called Composition where two to infinite amounts of images are merged to create your own vision. AGAIN who CARES what other folks do with their images. People CHEAT all the time when it's to win. You can't change other people so why even give them a second thought. Do photography for yourself or just spend all of your time worried about what the other guy is doing. Sorry about the rant but everbody seems hung up on this subject lately......... I recently returned from NYC shooting the city, now I'm looking for a place to shoot the coming fall colors. Booking portrait shoots, where I will change the foreground, background, the sky, the time of day, the weather, what Ever the client wants and I Don't Care. Have already booked the entire month of April 2022 with my guide in Costa Rica doing wildlife. Life is Great when I'm shooting and not worried about the other guy or what people think. Click, Click, Click, Click.....

I used Disk Drill to recover deleted images and reformatted over images. I use a Mac Computer so not sure what computer you use. It recovered 100% of the images deleted.. It recovered 80% of the ones formatted over

I shoot raw 100% all the time and post process every image. The technology behind sky replacement is very interesting but I would probably use it rarely, if ever, myself. The first reason I would not use sky replacement is because I am not interested in creating composite images. While I may remove distracting objects from images, I have no interest in adding people or objects or skies that were not in the original scene. However, I have no problem with composite images if others wish to create them.

Replacement skies have their uses and I am not against the concept itself, but I am disturbed by how they're used. I have seen many a good photo ruined by a poorly implemented replacement sky. I have often seen good skies replaced with ridiculously dramatic ones.

Too often these overly dramatic skies draw attention away from the main subject of the original image. In fact overly dramatic replacement skies often become the new main subject of an image. What makes this additionally concerning is that those sky replacement images used are in general rarely captured by the person using them. The result is that the most exciting part of the image wasn't actually captured by the person claiming ownership

In the hands of somebody who is skilled and using good quality software, sky replacements can be applied seamlessly. Unfortunately most people using sky replacements don't seem to possess that skill or a strong understanding of the use of light, reflection, and shadows. As a result the skies chosen are often inappropriate to the subject and don't match the image properly. In the worst cases they stick out like a sore thumb.

Some sky replacement software like Luminar attempts to compensate for lighting, shadows, and reflection, and often the results can be quite pleasing, but I've also seen sky replacement images processed by Luminar which were absolutely horrid.

I believe the overuse of easily available and dramatic stock replacement skies does not enhance the art of photography. Worse, when used often as an easy fix for problematic images, it can prevent novice photographers from improving their skills.

I'm having fun learning how to replace skies with the different softwares but it's the masking and layers that are the real benefits. I used NIK software for the longest time to help target areas of concern on my images, but too improve my editing skills I chose ON 1 Raw to learn editing and that came with sky replacements. At first it was fun, but since I take my photography pretty serious it soon lost it's charm for me, but I learned all about masking and layering in the process. To date I've only posted two images with any sky replacements. That said I recently did a graduation photo shoot on the beach and found the sky replacements the Perfect addition to finish out the images. They looked great, sand, water, sea oats, the subject, a few clouds, and everyone was happy. If it can earn me money and make clients happy I'm all for it. I take images for myself. I like to share on occasion but it's the hunt that keeps me going back for more. I have yet been able to take a bad image and make it great with any software, but I have taken a few good ones and made them great with a little help. I'm assuming some time in the near future they will be no need for a camera. You'll have a program on the computer that will create the perfect image to your liking with just a few key strokes. Personally I like keeping it as real as possible for my personal images.....But we are All Different......

I use both On 1 Raw and Luminar to play with sky replacements. As of date On 1 has the best application when masking around trees and bushes which are in a lot of landscape images, also for around portraits with fly away hair. That said it also takes time to mask around the more difficult scenes. Because it's a layer you can adjust the original and sky replacement separately to give the same lighting affect to look more natural. You can also just add a cloud or two to help improve the sky using their textures, a much more realistic look. Luminar on the other hand is very fast with sky replacements and the AI capabilities are able to blend the two together much faster, But as of date the fine tuning around trees and bushes is almost non existent, either it works or doesn't. Luminar has a New upgrade coming up this fall that looks very promising and they are bringing back layers. If they don't Improve the Masking brushes then it will be a flop, but if improved it will be leaps and bounds above the others. As mentioned they only have a few skies with the software and you need to start your own collection. I personally use ON 1 Raw as my main editor and then use Luminar as a plug in as I can use the best software or both for any one specific image. What I'm finding out is no one specific software does it all, but ON 1 with their new No Noise and continued improvements with layers and brushes is starting to walk away from the pack.
