Beautiful regalia! Why was the Clinchfield 800 known as the “Santa Special”?

The Clinchfield Railroad, 75 years ago began running part of its route from Elkhorn City, KY to Kingsport, TN. It is known as the Santa Special because it provide gifts to the less fortunate children and families in Southwest Virginia's coal region. The predecessor companies that operated the Clinchfield Railroad kept the tradition going. It is run the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The gifts have been collected and provided by the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce. The Clinchfield #800 was restored for this special occasion as well as the SD45 in traditional Clinchfield black.

Clinchfield F7 800 leads the special exiting tunnel and arriving at Clinchco and arriving to the crowds at Dungannon, VA. At the Streamliner event it was C&O #8016 before being repainted to its original Clinchfield colors for this event

Can't help but like Durango and Silverton and Cumbres and Toltec for the authenticity, next in that category is the Nevada Northern. All three well preserved railroads.

You are correct about the New Haven engine. That is why they brought it into the roundhouse to reinstall the pick up shoe though we don't have a third rail on the property but to make it look the way it normally ran

Did you get a shot of the driving controls?
Thanks, Pat

Pat, which locomotive do want to see the controls for. The Southern 6900 E8 had a desk top control for the brakes. The FP7 6133 has its brake and control stand
