Beautiful regalia! Why was the Clinchfield 800 known as the “Santa Special”?

The Clinchfield Railroad, 75 years ago began running part of its route from Elkhorn City, KY to Kingsport, TN. It is known as the Santa Special because it provide gifts to the less fortunate children and families in Southwest Virginia's coal region. The predecessor companies that operated the Clinchfield Railroad kept the tradition going. It is run the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The gifts have been collected and provided by the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce. The Clinchfield #800 was restored for this special occasion as well as the SD45 in traditional Clinchfield black.
