Four elements add up: rolling friction, calculated as total weight times the coefficient of friction; atmospheric drag (profile area times drag coefficient); acceleration, f=ma; hill climbing calculated as total weight times percent grade. I think railroads max out at 9% grade. A weighty problem.

For the record, the problem gas is nitric oxide, NO2. Nitrous oxide, N2O, is also called laughing gas, and has been used as an anasthetic.
