The shutter speed dial should absolutely not spin freely. I would check to see if they have another body & order it before returning the current one. That way they can't ship you the same body.

Not sure how shy they are but, they sure seem to love the light on the east side of our house. The orchids love it also.

Got over to the Gilbert Riparian Reserve this morning a little later than I wanted to. By the time I left at 10am, it was rather warm. Other than the GBH, I can't identify the specific variety of these birds. If you live in the Phoenix area & like to shoot birds, plan to visit the reserve several times. Make sure you visit all 7 ponds.

The strap connections on your camera body are not designed to support that much weight. I usually carry my A7RIII by the foot on the lens. If you want to use a strap, get 1 that screws into the bottom of the foot and make sure it stays tight. Otherwise you'll have it come unscrewed and you'll be sending your lens in for repair. Al make sure whatever you use to carry it is rated to hold that much weight.

My wife's sister called a week or so ago and asked if she would be interested in their Grandmother's cast iron roaster. Turns out it's a Wagner Ware 1285 #5 Drip Drop Roaster from about the mid 20's. We know it's a fairly early model because the ridges in the top were changed to plain oval lines from the zig-zag pattern in the late 20's. A lot of the seasoning was scrapped away at some point so it will take time to reseason before it's used. Looking forward to some good eating.

I know I certainly got a lot of use out of mine. That fact that the diaphragm leaves is so slow, or sluggish, make those lens unusable. does anyone know how I can free them up to make them useable again?

The lubricant applied to the diaphragm leaves when the lens was made has dried out. The lens needs to be disassembled & lubricated at least. I would suggest doing the full clean, lub, & adjust. That lens is worth it.

The Topcon cameras were highly regarded & many of their features (putting the meter cell behind the mirror) were copied by other makes. They just got buried by Nikon & Canon advertising & eventually disappeared from the market. You can still find Topcon bodies/lenses in good condition on ebay for higher prices than other SLR's of comparable vintage from Nikon & Canon.

I have a7ii and a7c. I'll take a look at what you reference. Thanks.

They should have very similar menu setups to the A7RIII.

I think it will depend on which model you have. I have an A7RIII. Here's the menu sequence to get to the file name section. Setup - page 5 - Set File Name. Press the button in the center of the wheel on the right & an abbreviated keyboard will come up. It will take a little getting used to but, you should be able to change the file designation for each body. Other bodies may have the option on a different menu page but, it should be very similar. I have Gary Friedman's book on the A7RIII. It has answered numerous questions on the multitude of menu settings.

When I was in Viet Nan in 1967 I bought a Topcon RE Super 35 mm camera. It cost me $400.00 then in the PX! I was told it was equal to or better than the NIkon F, and was the camera issued to Navy pilots for their photography. It had a 1.4 50 mm lens. Are you familiar with this camera and if so, do you know if it was used by any photographers in the Navy? I still have it but the diaphram leaves have gotten too slow for some reason, so no way to get a proper exposure..

The Topcon RE Super was marketed in the U.S. as the Besler Topcon Super D and adopted as the Navy's combat camera. It was the 1st SLR to have a light meter incorporated in the body rather than as an attachment. I got to use it while assigned to VP-30, the East Coast VP training squadron. Three of us were assigned to the squadron although we worked out of the base photo lab. Part of our duties was to teach basic photo techniques to the aircrew members. Any of ya'll who are former Navy Photographer's Mates or attended the Navy School of Photography at Pensacola there are a couple of facebook pages you might be interested in. The National Association of Navy Photographers has their own website as well as a facebook page. The school facebook page is for folks who are/were MC, PH, or JO types. Good group of folks on both pages.

If you're determined to get your MS 1000DTL repaired, I had good success with Camtronics Camera Repair in Columbus, OH when we lived there. Their website is https://camtronicscamerarepair.com/.

A good place to see pelicans is at the Morrison Ranch Lake on Higley just north of Warner, east side of the road. There are a couple signs indicating it's private for use of Morrison Ranch residents only but, all the rest of the signs indicate it's a Gilbert park. Nobody has bothered me anytime I've been there. There were about a dozen the last time I was there. They may have already left since winter is effectively over.
