Hello everyone, been reading this forum for a while and just joined today. a question about a canon 40D. Iknow its an old camera but I think it was a good deal at 97.00 witha shutter count of 1840. just noticed the main dial when turning to adjust shutter speed, after a few cliks the dial spins freely then will click a few more times. is this normal or is somthing wrong. bought on Amazon so can be returned if not working correct. thank you for letting me ramble on. Did lo0ok up manual online but couoldn't find this mentioned.

The shutter speed dial should absolutely not spin freely. I would check to see if they have another body & order it before returning the current one. That way they can't ship you the same body.

Assuming anyone even has the parts for that camera, repairing it would probably cost a few times more than you paid for it.

By the way, if you like that camera in general and you decide to return it because of this problem, I would suggest looking for a Canon 50D. It was a huge improvement over the 40D It will take excellent images in good light. Noise is fairly well controlled up to about ISO 800. Like the 40D it has a professional level magnesium alloy body.

The 50D LED screen has more than four times the resolution of the one on the 40D. The 50D also has a 15 megapixel sensor as compared to the 40D's 10 megapixel sensor. If you can find one with a relatively low shutter speed at a reasonable price, it could be a worthwhile investment for you.

The 50D is a much better camera, for cameras of that age. Hopefully, you can find one with no issues, at a reasonable price.

Just saw the 50D on ebay with a real nice 28-135 zoom for $220 Buy Now. Others are around $150 with a shorter kit lens.

That would be a nice combo although the 28-135 does not go particularly wide on a crop camera like the 50D. The only other concern with that lens is that it had a tendency for zoom creep as it aged,
which some people find annoying. However, that was not uncommon for many lenses from that period and there are ways of dealing with that.

Right, better to go for the one with the 18-55.

Personally, I think any of the EF-S 18-135 IS models is the best companion for the cropped EOS DSLRs, followed by wide(r) aperture primes.

Hello everyone, been reading this forum for a whil... (show quote)

For the record, I had a similar problem with a 5d4 about 3 years ago. Canon wanted $400 to repair since they wanted to replace the entire top assembly. I called Discount Camera Repair and got a quote from Rick for $125-$150 to replace just the dial. The lower estimate was if the dial was okay and usable with a cleaning and lubing. The higher was if the dial had to be replaced with a new one.

Was looking for a body only. Have other Canon cameras and lens. Also still have an EF-S 18-135, was on a 60D that died a long time ago.
