Raden, the best way is the way that works for you. Don't try to copy another persons workflow; you can take tips from here, but develop your own style.

best advice everyone has their own workflow that works for them

Remember when the moon is first rising it is darker than when it gets up in the sky and you need to adjust you settings accordingly. check the histogram , expose to the right but do not touch the right side so you do not blow out the moon

I gave my D300s and the Kit lens 18-105 to my grandson and he takes great photos with it. Now it it is not the top of the line lens but if this is your first DSLR I would by the whole kit, and as other have already commented then add lens as you progress

One common error in composition; don't only look at the subject in isolation but how the subject, its surroundings and its background appears in the viewfinder as a whole. Look around and take into consideration what else is there before pressing the shutter and recompose as necessary. Rob.

Just remember that rules are guidelines not absolutes

The rule of thirds is a popular guideline for image-making and requires the subject to be positioned off-center. It is claimed that following this technique will create more tension, energy and interest in photo composition. But be careful not to over-think your composition. Although Henri Cartier-Bresson created images that were perfectly composed and balanced, he actually often shot spontaneously and frequently spoke about working on instinct. Ansel Adams is famous for saying: “There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.”

After debating this purchase for months (actually, probably longer), I got this lens and it arrived from BH today. It's much bigger and heavier than I thought, but more importantly, there aren't any instructions with it.

Is the L-shaped bracket on the lens designed for use with a tripod? I (sadly) can't figure out what this bracket does.

The lens seems so heavy. Does just screwing it into the camera really keep it on? Yikes! I am afraid to do anything until I learn more and need to get the '101' on using it...

As I said I hand hold this lens here are some photos from today hand-holding the 70-200 with a 1.7x converter

I tried for the first time last night to take a picture of star trails. I started at about midnight....fell asleep and when i woke up a few hours later my battery was dead. I'm using a Canon T3 with the 18-55mm kit lens. Also a fully charged newer litium battery. My settings where:
Camera on a tripod with a remote shutter release
Lens at 18 mm F 3.5
Manual focus to infinity
IS off
ISO 100
White balance "daylight"
Shutter speed "Bulb"
Long exposure noise reduction "On"
File size "Large"
So my question is #1: how long will a "fresh" battery last during long exposures. #2 when I get home this afternoon and put in the charged up battery will I have any image.

Thanks for your help.

First shut off long exposure noise reduction, you can easily reduce noise in post processing and what noise reduction is doing is trying to take a second picture, that may be what drained your battery. I know there are people on line that say keep noise reduction on but I have not had a problem with it off

I hand hold mine most of the time. For best control hand holding turn the tripod collar to the side so you can support the lens underneath with your left hand and use you right hand to control the camera. And as been written previously get a quick release mounting plate to attach the lens to your tripod's head
