I went out last night to photograph the moon. Very disappointing results. Used the moon rules I have read here ISO100, F11 or 16, shutter speed 1/100. I'd post the pictures but I'm too embarrassed.
Where did I go wrong?
Post some samples for effective help.

Ok here goes 1 ISO100 f/11 ss 1/100 #1248
second ISO 200 f/16 ss 1/60
third ISO 100 f/14 ss 1/100

First ISO100 f/11 ss 1/100 #1248
second ISO 200 f/16 ss 1/60
third ISO 100 f/14 ss 1/100
I added 3 I don't know where the third one went to. Also the numbers got twisted around. Maybe I should just add one at a time. I'll just add two #1236 and #1248

After you took a test shot or two did you not check the review screen on the back of the camera and notice that the images were coming out way too dark so that you could adjust the settings accordingly?

Nothing at all wrong can I paste the shot you took adjusted
It appears that you did not zoom in and the moon is just a small part of your scene. Your settings were probably more for a large, brightly lit moon that filled your image.

Yup I did Then the shots came out way too light with the moon over exposed.

Last night I also took pictures of the moon:
f16 iso100 WBsunlight speed 1/125 hand held.
it needs zooming 100% and pp - it was taken with a 300mm full stretch.
your settings are about right for a full moon, but you would need a little bit longer shutter speed for the moon part covered by trees.
ps this was 2 of 36 taken - all the rest were rubbish as too much camera shake. This one will get a good PP and go into file to add to something else (i think)

Could also be that the reflection of the moon on water foiled the settings in which case speed might be better faster rather than slower or an fstop decrease. As you have been told - its a hit and miss thing depending on what else is in shot and how much you want to be displayed. Go for lots of attempts at a fair range of speed and apperture. then edit like crazy. if all else fails cut n paste.
hope this helps you feel better

Both of your shots were adjusted with ease in psp

The shot over the water is really lovely! You can't get a lot of moon detail and landscape detail simultaneously when it's so dark out - too much contrast between the darks and lights. If you can shoot when full moon is first rising, or when it's setting, in the couple of days a month where those times are closest to your sunset/sunrise, you will have many more options. The linked website below is handy to have (unfortunately, we have been overcast or raining those "sweet" times for months now!):
