Hello uhh members. For those of you who have used step down rings on your lenses here is my question.I have just purchased the tokina 11-16mm 2.8.The thread on that lens is 77mm I have 67mm filters I used on my canon 17 to 85.Ten mm seems like a lot to step down.Do any of you members think I will have a lot of vignetting at 11mm with a ten mm step down? After the expense of my sons graduation and the lens purchase I had to go this route and never have used step down rings in 30 years of shooting.

Yes you will. Step down rings work with tele lenses but not wide angle. You could just hold your filters about where they would be with the ring and see what happens> - Dave

Thank you Dave.I thought as much will try and see how much I will get when I shoot wide.I have 77mm filters just no neutral density.I will be buying the hoya variable neutral density after I recover from the recent expenses. :D :-D

With step-down rings I would NEVER go more than 2-3mm down with a wide-angle, and would always try before buying!!

With a telephoto, you might be able to get away with 5 or 6mm without problems.

You need to buy a larger filter.

Get a bigger filter and a step up ring to use on your original lens.

Or, get a wide angle lens that uses 67mm filters.

The concept of "Step down" is to allow you to use 77mm filters on your 67mm lens - the larger filter will always cover the total area of the smaller sized lens, not the other way.

Everyone is right you can't use the smaller filter 67 on the larger lens 77. Actually you can but the results will be horrible.

I bought some 77mm filters and step-up rings, so one filter can be used on any of my lenses. I wish I had learned that trick years ago.

Before you spend money on filters that large, read reviews.

Wide angles will pick up anything within their field of view.

Thank you for all the responses.I guess it will be live and learn on this.Good thing it only cost $7.00.Over the years I have always bought the right size filter for the lense.I will be saving the money for the hoya variable neutral density its right at $200.00.Also I would like to know if any members have expierance with promaster filters?
