Someone’s already mentioned AA, which was my first thought. Then 1950’s travel book illustration (think I may historically have said something similar about another of your shots Graham). This is b&w landscape photography at its best, methinks.

The ‘face-on’ corner shot is clever Erich - a well-spotted perspective. Not keen on the angle of 2. It may seem staid but I’d prefer a square-on for that one.

Superb portrait shot Graham, beautifully processed and full of ‘county market’. I used to live fairly close to the Heygates mill in Northamptonshire years ago!

It seemed to me there might be more impact with the dancer closer to the fire, so I chopped some out of your middle If this idea is of interest, I know you'd re-position the neat textures & design of the background and maybe lower the flame a bit. Fascinating sculpture for you to work with, Dave, and I sure love that background.

Yep, could move her in a bit but just got to watch that background. I photographed it for use as a texture but it’s so yummy I decided it could stand in its own right. I’ll take some more along that stretch of beach when I’m there again. By the way, I’m not receiving anything from UHH at the moment, no lists, replies, pm’s - all have ground to a halt. Checked my mail settings and all seems good. I’ll contact admin but meanwhile I hope everyone will bear with me.

The elements seem to fit with each other. If I'm nit-picking, I think the blend of lighting could be more convincing. I think the light on the dancer should have more of a glow from the fire. That is, I should say, being very critical. There is a glow and you did make an attempt to match the lighting.
Erich

Got to agree Erich, bit more work required!

Yes, I know, a dancer with no feet!
The figure is part of a large sculpture on display at the Eden Project in Cornwall. Background is a local sand cliff. The fire is borrowed from the web.
Your opinions valued, as always.
If my response to any comment left seems tardy it is because my current communications from UHH are somewhat wanting - trying to sort that one.

"Answering" a couple of your questions: Compositionally, I placed the apple at the apex of an unstable triangle, guesstimated (attached), because I wanted people to feel unsettled. The photo is a composite, of a pic in a local library (attached) and my apple from the beach.I was hoping that the colors and proportions were pleasing, so the upset was pleasant, a discovery that discoveries can be pleasant.
Did I really intend all that? Yup, although I just started with thinking the apple in the library was cool. The other stuff came, as usual, as I figured out why I like the objects.

Not sure I’m with the dodgy triangle theory, but good to know what was in your mind at the time. Like the library shot and the apple, not too keen on being ‘unsettled’.

So is this a recent shot Bob - I seem to remember you complaining about no clouds around at the moment? Recent or not, it’s a superb image and up with your usual standard. I might choose to crop a little from the top just to balance things?

My apple has appeared elsewhere!

We used to have a red umbrella that popped up all over the place here in FYC, but the least said about that the better!

My Apple (iPad) keeps putting a capital letter at the front of yours, but I’ll get used to that the more we see and respond to it. In this case, I would like to see the apple (mastered it!) placed one-quarter the way in from left, sitting on the white diagonal. Then take just a tad off the bottom. As is, I find I’m looking up and down rather than being lead into the image. The whole thing it nicely attractive, colours, lines, and composition of everything bar the apple. Interested to hear your thoughts on it Bob.

I like this too Bob, but it doesn’t quite pull off the Turner effect for me. Probably due to the position and size of the apple(?). A little higher in the frame would assist. The image has tons of interest without the apple of course.

The Turner connection is more obvious with this one Graham, did you dob it on as an afterthought, much the same as the Master was depicted doing in the film? It certainly improves the composition disproportionally to its size (in both cases)!

A very attractive composite, well worth the effort. I like the simplicity and colours of the background, the way in which they set off the subject, and the superb composition. All comes together perfectly.

I’ve got loads of those Graham! Living near the sea this doesn’t hold any surprises for me but I like the subject and the colours. Left to my own devices I’d have made more of the buoy, right or wrong, it’s a natural attraction.
