What a lovely shot! Very crisp, perfectly composed and realistic colours to boot. The flowers are a contributing bonus without stealing the show. Must have made the hike feel very worthwhile.

Yes, at times I read my links and moan and say ... did I actually say that ? ! But too many UHH people are so "sweet and kind" using words like nice good set. The first year in the TBCClub I was beaten to death with low scores... I ask bluntly why... and I was told... then the club would critique if asked... eventually critiques were for all. Typical in UHH gallery is that people do not crop to the story. Or, often they give perhaps 5 photos when only two are good and one really really good. And I will bluntly ask whey clutter your group show only good.

Regarding Linda, I have great admiration for her knowledge and gentle ways.

I agree. I seldom post in Gallery as I’m looking for critique - always. There’s nothing like a good honest response from a peer or two to straighten-out ones self-wonderment! FYC has proved extremely useful over the years and still keeps me on my toes, in a friendly way. Great environment.

Very nice series under I am sure very difficult lighting situation. My only nic pic is the deusch angle. I am not a fan.

It’s probably a ‘love it or hate it’ thing Frank. Have you had a look at dpullum’s links? You’ll hate ‘em! Or perhaps they’ll start to grow on you a bit! Thanks for commenting, it’s appreciated.

They certainly look happy - and the music looks good too. I’m sure I can hear that fiddle! Great little series Frank.

magnetoman " bit limiting for my little RX100"

Oh how humble your are... a little Sony RX100..... just a tad better than a cell phone, slightly larger sensor!! ... does the UHH crowd realize that the RX100 is highly rated, a 24/7 always there pocket camera, has a 1" sensor.... yes, limited in the 3X lens, that is why I bought the only competing Panasonic TZ100 with the 1" sensor and 10X lens. Reviews say image on Panasonic is softer at reach because of the lens, but can we see it in images, perhaps, but perhaps we can only see it in reviews. The RX100 wins the contest in reviews, by a tad.

You have done well getting these images... and so has that humble $1000 RX100

Yes, the RX100 has the same sensor as it’s big brother, the RX10, which I tend to use in preference to my Canon most of the time due to weight and bulk considerations. The 10 has that super Zeiss 600 zoom lens which is so useful. Nowadays I only use the Canon (FF) when on special shoots, when I want that extra quality or need a specialised lens - and I’m not trying to start a Sony/Canon war, I love them both! I’d really like to own the latest RX100 with its 200 zoom, but then, I’d like to own a lot of things that are difficult to justify! My mark IV 100 with its 70 zoom is, as you say dpullum, a handy pocket size, take everywhere camera. Sony are reputed to have improved AF in their latest versions of this and the 10 - oh well, I’ll dream on.
Hope this thread doesn’t turn into an equipment discussion!
Thanks for your comments and the Dutch Angle links - as I said earlier, Linda’s thread on this subject is well worth a re-read. Glad you found my post of interest.

Good approach. I prefer the singles, as those with more than one musician seem to have too much or not enough or lack balance.

Can’t disagree Bob, the multi’s don’t work as well simply because the crop cannot be so tight, leaving unbalanced corners. Thanks for commenting.

Dave, I like the gritty processing on these very much! I think the Dutch angle works on #1 the best because, along with your directed lighting, we're drawn immediately to the guitar. Also, there's a nice balance achieved with the musician on the left. #4 is the one I would most prefer to see straight, because the musician is static - and between his body language and the violin, it feels like this was probably a soft ballad, not a moment conducive to the tension the sharp angle presents.

A terrific series that absolutely makes me feel like I was there for the show.

Thanks Linda - mission accomplished then!
1 and 4 are my favourites and seem to make a pair. I agree, the fiddle fellow could be straightened, lose nothing and probably work better.

I don't see anything to slaughter. Compositions are spot on, and the ISO imposed (?) graininess in no way detracts from anything; as well, B&W is likely far more interesting than color would've been. Never heard the phrase 'deusch angles' before, but I get it nonetheless. It works well.

Thanks for your comments Cany. Linda has given a link to her thread on Dutch angle photos - that turned into an interesting discussion not long back. I hadn’t heard the term previously but used the technique occasionally.

...give in and accept it! Well, not quite, but a recent visit to our local folk club was a bit limiting for my little RX100. So, I capped the ISO at something I hoped I could control in pp, then added a bit of drama with deusch angles and went b&w for that old fashioned effect. Slaughter 'em as you will - all critique welcomed and gratefully received. The group is Julius LeVallon and they're all great musicians - try finding them on Google before they become famous!

Did you really think that it was going to be easy? Interesting.

Anyway, I like this guy’s work, which most likely means that Apaflo is going to make a comment that this guy would also be laughed out of Alaska and doesn’t know what he is doing.

But here is his website, hopefully you can get some ideas from his shots.

GFW’s images are certainly very attractive, but they do seem to present a satin finish generally rather than a gloss.

Nothing to contribute other than a thank-you to both ELS and Apaflo for such interesting and helpful contributions. I shall give this a go myself!

You’re a regular early bird Erich. Certainly got you a pair of very worthwhile images. #1 is an attractive shot without doubt. #2 is the winner though, especially cropped the Linda or fergmark way - the water tower takes on a sci-fi feel, sort of War of The Worlds. I want a water tower like that round here - right now the water would come in handy as well!

Yes, a nice shot Jim. I like the colour contrasts and the narrow band of green along which he’s running. All comes together rather well. That’s a hairy front leg he’s waving!

So far I prefer your second version Linda. White is very difficult to control once you’ve got it, if you see what I mean, so may as well make the most of it. It might be worth trying a bit of split toning if you have Lightroom, an instant effect changer (or at least, modifier) which would add a controllable amount of colour of choice. Used carefully it is hardly noticeable.

And here you go again Graham, another superb b&w landscape. Those telegraph poles make the shot for me! You really should be published you know.
