Chance Shot

I took this picture this Morning of our dog Sidney, a male Papillon. I was on the patio reviewing and trying different settings on my camera when I looked up my wife had just let the dog out. Saw him crossing this bright area of light and I asked my wife, Sharon, to see if she could get him to walk though the area again. We can never get Sidney to pose for us and he was on the move. Got ready and took the shot didn't know what I had until I saw it on the back of the camera. Sharon's legs were behind Sidney and needed to clone them out, otherwise I like the shot. Really liked the action shot with his flowing fur and his one paw up in the air.

Not a droopy hair on Sydney!
Now THAT’s a
excellent capture!

From the sounds of it, this shot was more like "chance shot with some help". The result is really nice. The sun really makes Sidney's features pop. I like the front paw which gives a good indication of movement. The eye is sharp and that is very important with pets and people. Well done.

Our Bunker does not like to pose for pictures either. When I'm doing portraits of him, I make sure that I have some treats in my hand. I set the camera up ahead of time on a tripod. I even use a stuffed animal that has similar markings and color as Bunker for exposure and focus. Then, when I want to shoot the dog, I remove the stuffed animal (or any other object that you are using for focus) and place Bunker on the spot that the focus dummy was in. He knows that I have the treat and that he will not get the treat if he moves around or toward me. I can get him to move his head into different poses by leading his eyes with the treat. It works pretty well. I can post an example or two if you would like.

Gorgeous! The shaft of light works great to showcase your show dog.

Yes, a nice shot Jim. I like the colour contrasts and the narrow band of green along which he’s running. All comes together rather well. That’s a hairy front leg he’s waving!

Thanks Erich. Sidney has never been a great dog to work with. Sometimes I think he is more cat than dog.

Thanks Linda. The light was the whole reason for taking the picture but as it turns out I think his flowing coat ultimately made the picture.
