Compare your FW version to OP ? If yours is older, maybe that warns you not to update ?

Interesting, I've been using Nikon EN-EL15Bs (Nikon originals that came with my Z6) in my Z8 with no concerns.

I have zero need for the claimed benefits of the new camera, zero interest in a MILC - I’m much more interested in the new film camera that Pentax may also release during the upcoming Spring. That MILC will have zero impact upon the photographs that I take. Incidentally, my photography is part of “everything” - but it won’t be touched by this thing.

That was pretty obvious, your negativity and lack of anything technically substantive fully supports your comments.

There is zero real information out so far, just hype, until it has been released and independent photographers have had a chance to use it!!

Why not just admit, you don't want or need one to assist your photography rather that continuing to show your biased ignorance.

Ah, so just showing your ignorance of all the information that is around to date?

I don’t trust those who have that camera now.

You could make a far more compelling case if you actually came up with some technicalities and something substantiative as to why. Or is that beyond you?

My goal in 2024 is to use manual settings in all photography that I do using a Canon R10 and Fujifilm X100V. Is this practical for flash photos? I appreciate any and all comments.

It really depends upon what the 'flash photos' are of.

If you are photographing subjects such as candid's of people at events you will possibly want to be able to grab the captures fast and move on with confidence. Manually setting the camera is easy, having the flash set manually to the correct power takes practice.

I've been struggling with this photo that I LOVE from the woman's facial expression but I'm just not sure the best way to edit it?
I've thought about blurring the background, taking out the background or just leaving it alone (which I'm not satisfied with )

Would love to hear your ideas...

Hows about this. Select subjects, reverse mask, reduce exposure to get what you want behind the woman's head. Then de-mask the lower part using the feathered brush to get what you want in the foreground.

Two minutes work in ACR.

Full area exposure reduction of all but woman and child

Foreground exposure not reduced as much as the rest

I'm using D850 (my D90 with built-in died 9 months ago). Don't do a lot of inside pixs but would like something for dark museum visits and inside/nighttime family events.

Any suggestions? Prefer ease of setup/operation/adjustment. Good set of diffusers. Other criteria you feel make one model the best choice?

I have and use the Nikon SB-600 (rarely now), SB-910 and the latest SB-5000.

Based on your comment "Prefer ease of setup/operation/adjustment" I would recommend looking at non-Nikon because the LCD screens are difficult to read/see in poor light compared to some other brands.

To answer your questions, over Thanksgiving I took some family group photos using the Tamron lens. A few days later I sold the Tamron so I don't have it anymore and couldn't compare at the same time to the Sony lens. The next day I purchased the Sony lens. About a week later I took a picture with the Sony lens using the same settings as the picture with Tamron. The time of the day was similar for both shots but not exactly the same. The distance from the camera to the subject was exactly the same. Both pictures were taken with the same AF, shutter released remotely with my phone.
It's not a scientific test just a general comparison.

Whilst there are of course differences in IQ between lenses, from the 'difference amount' you've attempted to demonstrate and from what you've said so far suggests the problem is either,

a) lens error
b) operator error

I'm using an entry level camera, Sony a6000 with APS-C sensor.
A year ago I bought a Tamron 18-200mm lens for APSC cameras. I really liked the Zoom capability but I couldn't take a sharp picture to save my life, even when using a tripod. So, last week I bought a Sony Zeiss 24-70mm full frame lens. What a difference! I can't believe that pictures can be so sharp.
The below picture shows side by side comparison of the same spot, the Aperture, ISO and shutter speed are the same and the distance from the camera to the subject is almost identical.

Whilst I will not comment on 'differences' between the two lens I have questions regarding your testing method,

a) Why is the framing so different?
b) Why have you undertaken a comparison test in such different lighting conditions?
c) Did you use manual focus to ensure ultimate focus on the same spot on the subject or rely on AF?

Thank you all for your insightful replies. Many of you have asked for an update so here is what I have done so far.
First I explored all of the menu options to see if I had enabled, (or disabled), something that affects the shield that protects the sensor when changing a lens. Could not find anything wrong there. Since I am using third party battery grips and I did not have the problem before using them I was pretty sure that was where the problem was. I removed the grip from the camera and went to using the camera without the grip. The problem went away so I am assuming that was the cause. I have used third party camera grips on all of my Nikon cameras and never had a problem until now. They worked flawlessly on my Z6's but I sold those cameras with the grips included. When third party grips became available for the Z8's I bought them. The do operate properly when attached to the Z8's and they do not seem to affect any other camera function other than the one I asked about in this thread. I am currently contacting the manufacturer to see if they have received any other complaints about this situation. Perhaps there may be a firmware update or something of that nature. (Firmware for the grip, not the camera). The camera is usable with the grip attached if you are willing to put up with it shuttting down every so often. For those of you who may be considering buying a battery grip for your camera the manufacturer is MCOPLUS and it does come with a one year warranty.

Thank you for the update.

Out of curiosity I looked up the MCOPLUS Grip Model for the Z8, (not certain it is the one you have) and quite surprised to see this comment within the specs on the AliExpress website;

"Note: This product cannot be used to record video, short circuit will occur. It can only be used for taking pictures".
