Upgraded as you are thinking of from DX to D600, bought used, had only 1 FX lens, and initially loved low light, great colors, then after going to Oshkosh air show and taking many fast and quantity of shots.. reviewing them started to see spots (oil shedding off shutter) contacted Nikon, confirmed serial US unit.. sent me email with pre paid shipper etc... 2 weeks later came back almost like new... can not praise Nikon enough, still love the camera and have picked up several older Nikon glass to take advantage of its great image quality... of being hesitant of 600 I’d look at 750 next up the line... enjoy which ever you do

William Deming was sent over as part of post war rebuilding

Japanese post-war economic miracle of 1950 to 1960, when Japan rose from the ashes of war on the road to becoming the second-largest economy in the world through processes partially influenced by the ideas Deming taught:[5]

Better design of products to improve service
Higher level of uniform product quality
Improvement of product testing in the workplace and in research centers

FYI regarding how Japan went from cheap knock offs to “Quality reputation. China will follow in their footsteps ?

Well it’s now Sept 25 and D600 has been returned with updated shutter, cleaned, tested and so far after 10 night shots everything is as it should be. Kudos to Nikon for charging me ZERO for repairs and shipping. I knew this could occur but had faith in Nikon and they came thru with flying colors... can’t wait for the drive to work tomorrow to test her out... sorry D40 your relegated back to the backup role..

Now as more pieces of the puzzle come into view, if she has a preference of canon or Nikon go with one of the kits from Costco either D3400 or T6 or T6i for me it was what was comfortable in wife’s hands (small and light) but still was manual enough with capabilities equal to film camera for me old school. Enjoy which ever you chose. I am sure they will be excited about it when received.

Renting and trying before buying is a great way, for me in 2011 it was my wife taking a photography class and the community college checking out various digital cameras, had a different one each weekend, Re-caught the bug on a Nikon D40, took many great shots, then bought one on eBay cheap, this from last camera of Minolta XD11 (loved that camera).
