While touring around the island aboard the National Geographic Explorer, we did multiple zodiac trips to explore closer to the rookeries and bays. Many of the pictures I published before were taken from the zodiacs. This time I am publishing pictures of the whales which we were privileged to see within an arm's length!!! Some were so close that even with the wide-angle lens, all I could get was their backs!
Sheep are raised by the farmers for the wool and the meat. They are let loose to roam everywhere and rounded up a couple of times a year. it is a communal event and, since they are all tagged, there are no issues who goes where. Once sheared, they go back inn the wild until next time, or they go to the plate!
Icelandic horses are a special breed, which are regarded worldwide and extremely well protected. No horses are allowed to enter the island from anywhere else. Theay are beautiful, strong, docile and those manes!
I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Our trip to Iceland in the Summer of 2021 aboard the National Geographic Explorer was extremely rewarding. There were natural wonders and wildlife galore. So far, I have published a sample of just some of the birds that live in huge colonies around Iceland and the surrounding smaller islands. Some of them are migratory and others are endemic to the islands. Black Guillemot, common eider, fulmar, barnacle goose, kittiwake, northern gannet, oystercatcher, phalarope, puffin, redshank, seagull, artic tern, snow bunting, etc.
Nature never ceases to amaze.

You will Ibarnett25. It is paradise for wildlife and they are not wary of humans, so you can get quite close.

This is a continuation of the prior posts showing some of the bird wildlife in Iceland.
Flatey is the largest island in West Iceland. The entire island can be easily covered by walking. There is abundant wildlife and the birds in the area mainly include migratory birds such as puffins and the arctic terns among others. Although, the puffins can only be found on the island during the summers.

While circumnavigating Iceland aboard the National Geographic Explorer we had the opportunity to visit several islands and see many different birds, some of which are documented here.
Flatey Island is located in West Iceland and it is home to over 50 breeding bird species.
In part one I published birds from Heimaey Island, which is just South of Iceland and in the next part we'll explore the Skálanes nature reserve.
As you can see there is a lot more to Iceland than puffins, but they are coming up anyway.
