Thanks Paul. Great post. I learned something new - put the extender in the lens first. I was not doing this.

Just got back from the Gorge. Our daughter lives in it. Lots of places so you’ll need about a week. Nothing is close, so for every outing, you’ll be driving 1.5-2 hours. In no particular order, Cannon Beach and the haystacks for sunsets, Mt Hood and in particular Lost Lake within Mt Hood National Forest; Beacon Rock State Park; Panther Creek Falls in Gifford Pinchot National Forest; and it’s not in the gorge but Silver Falls State Park is high on the list. Oregon’s premier state parks.

Will do. We're in Washougal until October 12 and then driving back to Pennsylvania. I'll be thinking about this the way home. I'll keep in touch.

Thanks for your insight Mikey. Appreciate it. I would like to make the move since I primarily shoot wildlife and lots of birds. Fran

Mikey, first of all, I live in Pittsburgh but how crazy, I’m in Washougal for a couple of weeks. Anyhow, are you using the EF 100-400 II with your R5? If so, how is that working for you. I am also thinking about getting the R5 but as you probably know lenses are he’s to come by. Thanks, Fran

I am curious on your decision in not staying with this RF lens. Thank you. Fran

Thanks for the tips. Just to clarify, are you using manual or auto focus?

Consider the Lowepro Flipside 300, 400 or 500. All have a built in waterproof rain fly. Got mine from B&H. I’ll be out there fly fishing as well. Have fun.

Great story and thanks for sharing!!! Those were the good ol days. In this day and age, thank goodness for memories. I too had a grandma like yours, we called her Buba (Croatian) for grandmother. I grew up on a farm with her. In your sharing this story, it sparked others’ stories of great times!!!

I posted on 1/31/21 how frustrated I was not being able to nail the focus on my subjects, especially small birds. I appreciate everyone's input, especially Paul in helping me sort this out. I promised to follow-up with some photos. Here are the results. Some of the things I changed were using either single or expanded AF with single point and 4 points; and a better understanding how BBF works. In particular, holding the BBF while taking a burst of photos got me some nice shots. Again, thank you!!!

I don't think the iso is ridiculous. Balancing the need to get the shutter speed up and middle of the road depth of field, knowing that camera can handle higher iso well. Besides, it would not impact the focus question she is asking.

Just a side note, Fran is a he.LOL. I do appreciate all of the suggestions I have received. I plan to follow up with some photos for comparison.
