That is definitely an immature Red-tailed Hawk. The dark patagial and belly band are a dead giveaway. The don't get their red tails until their second year.

I'm sure this was well intended but I don't take medical advice from anonymous "masters" students on the internet. This is how untold amounts of internet misinformation get circulated. I prefer getting the information I need regarding COVID-19 from the very qualified and identified specialists at CDC and WHO.

Thanks everyone. I think you've nailed it. This was shot with a Nikon D500, 1/2000 of a second @ 5 fps. I do remember having an unresponsive shutter for a second which used to happen with my old D300 but seemed odd with the D500 which is supposed to have a 40 something frame (RAW) buffer. I just wrote it off as a weird glitch. I'm off to work but will be running a firmware update.

I shot a series of 15 frames of this Peregrine Falcon This is the only one with this weird aberration. This shot is severely cropped. Whatever this is only effects the head of the bird. Has anyone else seen this? Can you enlighten me as to what went on here?

Top bird is definitely an adult Red-shouldered hawk. Nice capture.

Red-shouldered Hawks are no threat to your song birds. They are way too slow to catch birds. They prey on small mammals (mice and voles), amphibians, and reptiles. My local pair are very fond of frogs.

If you spend any amount of time around serious birders, people who take binoculars very seriously, you'll see that 90% of them are using Swarovski. They're expensive but if you want the best most of the pros go with Swarovski.

Great series. You must be somewhere to the south of me as my local Red-shoulders won't be doing this for a few months yet.

Besides the yard next door getting the dead tree removed and the one with a dead top trimmed so they don't have perches that are both safe and a good view before coming to my feeders this guy seems to be a permanent fixture around here now. Perched on trees, cruising over on patrol, perched on the phone and power lines, landing in my yard etc. Even when I can't see or hear calls I can tell when it is around by the birds being extremely skittish.
On the 21st when the first brave dove in hours came down on the old swing set and just as I was focusing BAM! gone. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something land on the wires, turned my head and here is Henery Hawk.

80D, Tamron 150-600 @ 600, 1/250 @ f/8.0, ISO 800 with fill flash off a tripod at about 60'-70'

I think I like the head position of #1 better but #2 is just a hair sharper.

Rounded tail feathers and brown color say this is an immature Coopers Hawk. Looks small so likely a male.

Heard unusual sounds the other late afternoon. My wife said...look at that bird on the balcony rail! Shoo it away.
So, I looked...took out my iPhone and took some pictures.
What did we find or what found us?
Thanks.

That's an adult Peregrine, an immature would be brown. The green band on it's leg indicates that it was banded in the eastern United States. Unfortunately the letter-number code isn't readable in your photo. If it were you could report it to USGS and they'd tell you where and when it was banded.

In answer to other questions: Stabilization was on but I've used it to take thousands of pictures and never seen this before. It was shot in RAW, using back button focus, and was not sharpened (but shadows were lightened a bit).
