One of the most important things when shooting wildlife is to study their habits. I have been shooting wildlife for quite some time now. I spent most of my time observing their habits such as how long do they feed before the head comes up to look around ( security check), what gets they’re attention ( whistle etc )do they stay in pretty much one location or do they keep moving, what is the surroundings like( peaceful, quiet etc).
Then I use the settings I have developed over the years ,many of which are stated above. JMTC

It depends how many focus points you have chosen. I would choose the 9 point option, this way you have control of where you point the camera to pick up eye detection.
